Day 1 - 5 Feb 2021
Content: Our second trip together! Finally holiday again. This time we chose to go to Egypt. We spent a few days in Luxor and than moved to Cairo/ Giza. We arrived in Luxor at about 3pm. We booked a private taxi to pick us up from the airport (it is 20 min taxi drive and the price was $17). We checked in to Sofitel Winter Palace and first day decided to chill in the hotel and have a nice dinner. The hotel is one of the oldest ones in Luxor. Very nice, old architecture with a lot of history. The hotel is a little pricey comparing to other ones in the area, but we had an amazing balcony view of the Nile River. By
Content: In the evening we decided to have dinner in the French restaurant located inside the hotel. The restaurants opens at 7pm. One of the rooms belonging to the restaurant requires to wear elegant clothes. Men have to wear long pants and a tie (without that they won’t be able to enter 🙈). Food and wine was very good.
Day 2 - 6 Feb 2021
Content: Contemplating of visiting Egypt? We would definitely say yes! While planning our trip we wanted to spend more time in Luxor as it has more to offer (in regards of historical treasures). We did some research and found a great travel company called “Djed Egypt Travel”. It’s not the biggest and most know company in Egypt but we really enjoyed their services. We booked a privet tour for 3 days (full price per person for 3 days $145). Our tour guide, lovely Egyptian lady named Amani shared with us all the details and facts about the temples and monuments. Itinerary for first day included: Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple. You will need approximately 2 hours for Karnak Temple and 1 hour for Luxor Temple. Entry ticket price for adults for Karnak Temple is 200 Egyptian pounds per person (around 13 USD) Luxor Temple 160 egyptian pounds (around 10 USD). Let me tell you a little bit about this places. Karnak Temple was mainly about worshiping the Sun God Amun Ru (beautiful 134 columns inside the Temple worth taking pictures with. Archeologists are not sure why the number was 134, they assume that maybe it was the number of Children’s that the pharaoh’s had). Luxor Temple unlike all other Temples didn’t serve to worship any Gods but was a place where Kings and Pharaoh’s were being crowned & acknowledged. It is situated along the Nile River.
Day 3 - 7 Feb 2021
Content: Day 3 in Luxor: Itinerary for our second day of sightseeing: West Bank – Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Nobles & Medinet Habu We had to wake up early because we needed to cross the Nile to the West Bank on our way to visit some of the tombs in the world-famous Valley of the Kings. This place was crowded (apparently not as it normally is) After Valley of the Kings we went to beautiful but not as famous Valley of the Nobles (we were lucky that there was almost no one over there). We also saw preserved mortuary temple of Ramesses III at Medinet Habu and had a brief visit to the Colossi of Memnon, two massive statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III built 3,400 years ago! The day felt long but it is totally worth it if you are interested in history. Our tour guide had lots of knowledge and she could answer any question we had. All the entrance fees during our tour were already included in the price that we paid to Djed Tour Egypt.
Content: After the tour we were too exhausted to look for a nice local restaurant. We ordered room service and set up our balcony table to have dinner with a nile sunset view 😍 it was wonderful!!
Day 4 - 8 Feb 2021
Content: And once again early morning wake up call. But it was super exciting because we are going on a hot air balloon tour 🎈 We already tried it in Cappadocia, but thought it would be cool to see Luxor from above as well. When we arrived, we were welcomed with a little snack and coffee / tea served on a little boat crossing the Nile River. The hot air balloon flew over the West Bank’s picturesque mountains, old villages and the ancient temples. For the best chance of a clear flight, these hot air balloon flights leave daily before sunrise; the early start is well rewarded by the magnificent sunrise, which lights up the ancient monuments and the unending desert. Luxor from up high is also beautiful – A truly unforgettable experience. We must admit that we were quite impressed with the difference of the landscape. Some parts were super green and on the other side you could only see the desert. The hot air balloon ride wasn’t long at all, definitely less than 1 h. Price was not included in the tour that we booked. Price: US$110 adults, US$55 under 12s including private transfers Everything was booked through Djed Travel Egypt so we didn’t have to worry about anything.
Day 5 - 9 Feb 2021
Content: We decided to experience different hotels in Luxor and we moved to Mercure Luxor Karnak. We didn’t regret it at all. It is a beautiful resort located on the Nile River. Huge pool, spa, gym, tennis court. There are few little stores located in the hotel (Or those who love to send postcards- like me 😜- they sell stamps too and there is post mail in the reception) as well as a hair dresser and nail salon. Few restaurants (outside around the pool and inside of the hotel). There is one bar located inside of the hotel and one called “sundowners” (rooftop bar overlooking the Nile River). Very relaxing atmosphere and super friendly staff. Especially Mr Mahmoud Ibrahim ( He deserves to be mentioned ☺️). Loved the greenery around the Nile - perfect spot to watch the sunset. Breakfast buffet was nice as well. We preferred table outside on the terrace, overlooking the palm trees and the pool. Hotel is located a little bit outside of the city center what makes it more relaxing as you escape from the city center madness. Also hotel is offering taxi services up to and from the airport and few different places/ cities in Egypt. We would definitely go there again!! Good to travel with the kids as well as hotel has perfect facilities for families 😀
Day 5 - 9 Feb 2021
Content: Wonderful last evening in Luxor. We went on a sunset Nile Cruise on a traditional Nile felucca. We had a chance to try an Egyptian style lunch (with diverse mezze and fresh-baked sun-raised bread, freshly prepared at the famous Sofra restaurant). Accompanied with some sparkling grape juice and Arabic coffee. We booked private tour so there was no one else with us on a boat. Your are operating daily from any hotel in Luxor; US$30 per person including private Felucca, lunch on board and private transfers. Relaxing time with great views- definitely recommending.
Day 6 - 10 Feb 2021
Content: Last breakfast in Luxor was done and we were on our way to the airport. We took a domestic flight to Cairo. We flew Egypt Air and the flight took 1h. We arrived in Cairo quite late. We booked a private taxi to pick us up and take us to the hotel in the city center. The taxi drive from the airport to the Steigenberger Hotel took 45 minutes (depending of the traffic). We payed $20 for a one way ride.
Day 6 - 10 Feb 2021
Content: We arrived at the hotel located in the city center. It is about 5min walk from the Egyptian Museum (the one located in the city center) We chose this hotel because the laboratory approved for covid test was in a walking distance as well. We had a lovely dinner at the hotel restaurant. Delicious!! The quality of the food was really nice. Definitely recommend it!! Staff in the hotel were very kind and helpful as well, especially the gentleman standing outside of the hotel and welcoming guests.
Day 7 - 11 Feb 2021
Content: Early morning and we went for the covid tests. We were lucky to meet a young Egyptian lady who guided us and helped us a lot during the whole process, as the laboratory was quite full. After that we walked to The Egyptian Museum. It was impressive! This wonderful museum of Cairo has about 120,000 items as they say. It has a huge collection of ancient Egyptian antiques. If you like history you would definitely enjoy it! I was truly shocked seeing the real mummies!! Museum was built in 1901 and open to public in 2019. Now few months ago there was new much bigger museum built called Grand Egyptian Museum located in Giza. The Egyptian Museum was being replaced. Lots of things were being moved as well.
Day 7 - 11 Feb 2021
Content: After visiting The Egyptian Museum we took our bags and moved to our next hotel. This time we stayed in Giza. We booked our private taxi on booking.com. The car ride took around 45 minutes and the price was about $20 We were super excited to be in our new hotel. Such a beautiful place! Located only 5 minutes walking distance from the Great Pyramids of Giza. Big, spacious rooms with balconies overlooking the pyramids too! I mean watch the pictures and tell me... could you say no to that?
Day 8 - 12 Feb 2021
Content: We really enjoyed our tour with Djed Egypt that’s why we decided to book the private tour with the same company in Cairo. Our tour started early. The car picked us up from the hotel and we were in front of Pyramid of Giza as soon as they opened. Tickets were included in our tour. If you are planning to bring big camera, tripod or gimbal you have to pay separately for that. The Pyramids were beautiful. We reach there early so It was not busy yet. We were fortunate enough to be the only ones inside of the Great Pyramid. Cannot imagine visiting it when it is fully packed. NOTE: Be cautious with people offering camel/ horse rides. You need to bargain, without doing that they will charge you a huge amount of money. Even after the ride they will say that they work on commission/ tips and will expect you to give them something. (Also they have different prices for locals and for foreigners). Is it worth to visit? I would say yes! We took a private tour and the lady shared with us lots of interesting facts. I still cannot imagine how those people back in the days could build these pyramids ... it still makes me wonder how could they lift those heavy blocks of stones!! Definitely “a must visit once place” in your life.
Day 8 - 12 Feb 2021
Content: After all day of sightseeing we were happy but tired as well. We decided to have dinner in the restaurant called “139” located in the hotel where we stayed. Beautiful view and delicious food. The staff was very kind and helpful as well. We were hoping to see the light show on a pyramids in the evening but unfortunately it is not visible from the side where the restaurant is located.
Day 9 - 13 Feb 2021
Content: We woke up early to make sure we have a nice table with a Pyramids view during our breakfast. Food was delicious. Amazing, buffet (wide selection of food, live cooking stations as well). If you choose to sit outside you will be able to see 2 pyramids. The view makes you want to stay there forever!
Content: Last few hours before we were leaving Egypt. Our stay was quite busy and we never had a chance to visit the pool, so we decided to spent this last time in a relaxing way. The hotel has big swimming (sadly there is no view but the place is really nice). We ordered some snacks and Egyptian beer before our pick up. As previously we used private taxi services to take us to the airport.
