Day 1 - 26 Dec 2019

Abeid Amani Karume International Airport

Zanzibar, Abeid Amani Karume International Airport

Content: Arrived to Zanzibar Airport and had rented a car to drive to Kendwa, our first destination. Beware when driving in Zanzibar, the roads are in quite a rough confition and there are lot of animals running to the street. Zanzibar airport is a small but busy airport with only a few cafes. No decent food or shops but the queus are the longest ever! This pic is taken on the road to our hotel.

Location: Kendwa

Day 1 - 26 Dec 2019

Mocco Beach Villa & Restaurant

Kendwa, Mocco Beach Villa & Restaurant

Content: Our first hotel was Mocco Beach Villa in Kendwa village. We chose to stay in the Northern parts of Zanzibar as it’s the only part where the tides don’t affect swimming. Kendwa is a peaceful, quiet beach village mainly for families and couples. The beach is beautiful but there are no clubs (for nightlife, opt for Numgwi - I’ll tell you all about it later in this itinerary). There are different snorkeling and diving excursions leaving every day from Kendwa beach. We stayed in Mocco Beach Villa because it’s location directly on the beach. The photo is from the breakfast/dining area on the beach. The Villa has its own sunbeds. Otherwise the property is not in good condition and the rooms not that clean.

Kendwa Beach

Content: Lovely, quite paradise beach with white sand and turquoise water! Mostly resorts on the beach and the restaurants belong to them. Long beach and not many rental sunbeds but each hotel has its own.

Content: Snorkeling trip to Tumbatu island! We took a boat from the beach and dod a half day trip. The snorkeling is easy, no big waves or current. Some places are better than others as the coral is mostly dead. Go with divers if you can, they have the best places and usually give you a guide.

Content: Saw a group of dolphins on the way back to the hotel. Beautiful but don’t expect to swim with them (the guides promise you this), they are just too quick and gone before you get off the boat.

Day 5 - 30 Dec 2019

Nungwi

Zanzibar, Nungwi
Zanzibar, Nungwi

Content: Today we drove to Nungwi and our second stay in Maama Nungwi Lodge. The hotel itself is not recommended, we had a major problem with flies, mosquitoes, ants and lizards. Also the location is not great as it’s not beachfront and Nungwi beach is a very busy place. You want to have your own sunbed area there.

Location: Nungwi

Day 5 - 30 Dec 2019

Nungwi Beach

Nungwi, Nungwi Beach

Content: Nungwi beach has a variety of seafood restaurants. Most of the restaurants offer African styled cooking. Prices are quite high, main courses are 20-30€.

Content: Nungwi Beach is a nice beach for swimming due to its crystal clear water, white sand and several activities. Want to go to nearby islands, or to snorkel or diving? Just walk to the beach and you’ll find your excursions. There are no currents so it’s a safe and easy beach to spend time.

Content: Today we went to explore Stone Town before flying to Kilimanjaro for our safari. Stone Town has some very powerful museums and statues of the slave era as it was one of the slave trading capitals. These sights are worth a visit! Remember to bring some water with you as the stone walls make the town warm up and there’s no breeze to cool you off.

Content: Stone Town is a nice town as everything is within walking distance. Personally as the town is quite busy and noisy, I prefer a day trip to the town and having the accommodation somewhere by the beach.

Content: We flew to Kilimanjaro airport late in the evening and slept in Arusha town close to the national park while waiting for our safari to start. We booked our safari through Gosheni Safaris and I cannot recommend them enough! Our guide Erasto has the eyes of the eagle, he spots all the animals miles away! We saw all the big 5 with him! Our safari begun in Tarangire National park which is also called the Elephant Playground as there are so many of them! We managed to see elephants, lions, wildebeest, warthogs, monkeys, giraffes and so much more!

Gosheni Safaris team had prepared a wonderful warm African style lunch with local white wine for us and they even set up the table. The car you see in the picture was our vehicle for the tour with fridges, cold drinks, phone charges and everything you need.

Content: We reached our lodge for the first night in the evening before dinner time. It was better than any 5-star hotel! No bugs at all, bathtub, shower, several beds, sofa and lounge area and Maasai people guarding the camp. As the camp is unfenced the animals get quite close and you’re not allowed to move outside your tent without a staff member. Just imagine having dinner and sleeping in the middle of a national park under the stars listening to the voices of the animals!

Content: Our last safari destination was Ngorongoro crater. It is a crater of an ancient volcano which has dropped down and created a green living space for the animals. It’s quite small so you’ll see plenty of animals as they can’t spread like in Serengeti. There’s a huge lake with flamingos and we saw our only rhino here! We slept in Ngorongoro Farmhouse, a great hotel with pool and live music.
