The hike took roughly an hour before we met the largest family of chimps that are in the park, as part of safety protocol we were allowed an hour with the chimps and we had to wear a mask at all times (remember we share nearly 96% DNA with chimps so they are incredibly susceptible to our viruses and diseases) the family was super lively and animated and the whole experience was more magical than I could have imagined!

Set in the jungle, the lodge boasted gorgeous wooden structures, friendly staff and incredible food. Content: Once we had our safety briefing we travelled in convoy deep into Bwindi forest, to the point where we would begin our trek through the tea plantations and down into the forest. We hiked for approximately an hour and a half before we meet the family of gorillas we were searching for. We had a total of an hour to spend with these elusive animals and it was easily one of the most awe inspiring moments of my life. We saw the large silverbacks, the nursing mothers and also the smallest gorilla out of all the families in the forest, which was only 3 months old. Once our time was up, our guides brought us back through the forest to where our jeeps were waiting.

We made it just after sunset, checked in and had a lovely dinner before getting some much needed rest.

Content: After a lovely breakfast, we set sail on a small boat for a tour around Lake Bunyonyi, which is a set of small islands dotted on the lake where communities live, operating in the most fascinating way on the lake we learnt how the locals canoe to work, school, hospital ect. Everyday. We also got to witness how they transport livestock from island to island! The most haunting island is the one where disgraced women who’d fallen pregnant out of wedlock were left, standard and eventually would die. The sad history albeit difficult to hear made for an interesting tour and gave us an insight into some of the cultural norms that used to take place in Uganda before the introduction of religion by travelling missionaries.

Entebbe

Content: After our lake tour, we made the long journey back to Entebbe which took 9 hours until we reached our guesthouse for our final night in Uganda before we flew out the follow day! Overall, although the itinerary was busy and we had long days in the van, my experience in Uganda was once in a lifetime. It felt like an untouched area of East Africa, which made it all the more special. I felt with this itinerary we got the best out of the countries and left with the most incredible experiences.
