Day 1 - 1 Mar 2019

Queen Alia International Airport

Amman, Queen Alia International Airport

Content: We arrived in Jordan to celebrate Laura’s 30th birthday! It was late, but we loved the Royal Jordanian airlines we flew in on—probably one of the nicest ever. The airport itself is immaculate and grand, which is common in middle eastern countries. Visa on arrival was quick and easy, same with picking up our bags. We went through a travel tour operator to organize our trip, and we were greeted by Qais, a 6 foot 4 inch Jordanian man who ended up being one of the funniest and nicest people we’ve ever met. He really made Jordan even more fun. We drove a couple hours to Madaba to check in for the night.

Content: Quite honestly, we’ve never heard of Jerash prior to our trip, and it’s a shame! If you’re in Jordan, you have to make a stop in this massive and glorious ancient city. You can see the Roman chariot horse tracks cut in the stone streets, see old butcher and retail shops, amazing Greek inspired fountains, temples dedicated to the gods, and the crossroads and center point for trade to Syria, Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. This is the King’s Highway, and seeing how well preserved this area is took our breathe away.

Content: Just. Wow. The landscapes drastically changed from greens to red sand with jetting unique mountains. The driver turned on Eminem, and then it was a party haha. We arrived in this amazing camp to go glamping overnight in the Wadi Rum desert. Our accommodation had A/C and amazing views inside of these Martian like domes. We went for a camel ride for sunset as well! There was a larger dome area for breakfast and dinner, and Dan even had the honors of brushing the sand off over the oven in the ground for a delicious slow cooked lamb to be pulled out to serve. We enjoyed hookah at night, and took amazing night time pictures. The stars were the brightest and most we’ve ever seen in our lives. Never would we forget this night!

Content: We were ready for our desert adventure, scarves and all! The tour lasted two hours, operated by our accommodation. We made several stops, the first one exactly where Matt Damon sat for The Martian movie. Lawrence of Arabia ventured through these exact same areas, and there are VERY old carvings you find also see on the rocks, giving others directions for trade and routes from many centuries ago. You will probably get sandy, and the breeze is cold but the sun is HoT!

We enjoyed hookah at night outside with views of the sea and the many countries and their city lights that you can see bordering the sea (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Israel). Breakfast in the morning was the most extravagant buffet, even with a giant honeycomb dripping fresh honey for your yogurt or oatmeal.

Content: One of the coolest places we’ve visited—Petra! You walk about A mile through a canyon and see old carvings into the rocks along the way, as this used to be the passage to get to the Red Rose City. The treasury is actually featured in an India Jones movie as well, so it felt even more adventurous. Unfortunately there are many local vendors that are pushy to sell you trinkets, and many donkeys and camels pushed to their limits taking tourists up the steps to the different areas of Petra. Be prepared to wear good walking shoes, because to explore it all will take you several hours. We went back at night for a special performance of Petra at night under the stars. We got there early at the entrance and the line became extremely long quickly. Once allowed to pass, we ran ahead of everyone down the mile canyon passage again to snap a picture of just both of us with all the candles lit and stars above the Treasury.

He pointed to a pillar saying there are many in the area that people speculate are the people who looked back and turned to salt.

Content: We enjoyed the Dead Sea the next morning, with all of its exfoliating and mineral rich benefits. You put the mud on, bake in the sun, then wash it off in the water. Lifting your feet you immediately go buoyantly upwards, such a strange sensation! Make sure to wear some sun glasses and avoid any splashing possible. It’s very dangerous to get the ultra salty water in your eyes and one poor guy was in so much pain when he splashed in his eyes.
