Iloilo City

Iloilo, Iloilo City

Content: Since I am from Iloilo City, my day 1 starts here to Boracay Island. Iloilo City is an hour and thirty minutes away by plane from Manila and an hour from Cebu City. For tourists, Iloilo is a good jumping board to island destinations in Panay. Book a hotel within Iloilo City and hotels are relatively cheap here. Choose hotels within the city proper. Tips: There are direct flights from Manila to Caticlan airport, you can take that option if coming from that area. Boracay Island by car is around 4 hours drive without traffic and taking short routes. You can rent a car with a driver or you can take the Ceres Bus from the Tagbak Bus Terminal in Jaro (Iloilo City) but the trip would be around 6 hours. Leave early to avoid traffic.

Caticlan Jetty Port

Malay, Caticlan Jetty Port

Content: Caticlan Jetty port is the gateway to Boracay Island. Once you reach the Jetty port there are agents to assist you to make your journey smoother. You can also buy your tickets on your own. We took an agent on stand-by (they have IDs) and they arranged everything to include the registration, the boat tickets and the transport from Boracay Island jetty port to your hotel. The difference was only Php100 or $2.00 for the services they offered per head. Tips: You need your vaccination card, a valid ID, hotel booking confirmation and round-trip tickets if coming by plane. For unvaccinated travelers, you need a negative RT-PCR result taken within the last 72 hours prior to your departure to the island.

Boracay

Content: The boat ride to Boracay Island from the Caticlan Jetty Port takes only 15 minutes and the fare per way is around around $6 to include the environmental and terminal fees. As you can see in the picture, the sand is powdery white amidst the blue-green sea (there were algaes at this time of the year). Most times the water is Caribbean blue.

Boracay Talipapa

Malay, Boracay Talipapa

Content: We dropped our bags at the hotel concierge as check-in time was at 3:00pm. Since we hadn't had breakfast we decided to eat at the Talipapa, it's a chain of restaurants offering fresh seafoods. You choose from the array of seafood, have them cooked and served the way you want. It was 5 minutes from our hotel and we were famished. There will be a number of locals who would offer this to you as each restaurant has agents on look-out for customers. It's relatively safe. You can also haggle. You can also choose from the restaurants along the beachfront and mind you, there are restaurants everywhere.

Content: We lounged by the resort's poolside while awaiting check-in. Henann Garden has 4 swimming pools, has gym area and direct access to the beach front. For the first night, we went to have dinner at a nearby restaurant. There are so many restaurants you can choose from for all types of budget. All you have to do is look around.

Content: Waking up to this resort is heavenly. Breakfast was a choice of American and Filipino buffet. We woke up early as we had planned to go on an island hopping trip. When you go out the beachfront, there will be a number of local travel agents who would approach you for the activities you want. There is scuba diving, parasailing, boating, banana boat rides, helicopter rides, landtrips and so forth. You never ran out of activities in Boracay.

Boracay Island

Content: We paid around $12 for the island hopping trip with free lunch on the mainland. The boat trip did not go too well as it was so windy. The waters were not also as clear as the skies were a bit gloomy. Lunch was frustrating because there were a lot of people who queued for food and there was no social distancing. The islands were beautiful though. We got to see several of them and we certainly had great pictures.

Content: The tour ended at around 3:30pm and we were too tired to do other activities. We just lay on the beach and waited for this beautiful skyline. Dinner was at a nearby restaurant.

Mount Luho

Content: We climbed up the deck at Mt. Luho, the highest point in the island. It was beautiful to be up there as you get to see the whole island. You can also rent bikes and explore on your own.

Content: The New Coast Boracay area is beautiful and it is located at the back part of the island. The hotels here and condominiums are new and construction is still on-going. Don't miss out the Keyhole as the view is IG worthy. The beachline is also beautiful as there are less people. If you want privacy and are not keen on nightlife activities, stay in this area. It's around 30 minutes ride from the main hub.

Content: We spent the rest of the afternoon at the beach. We rented a paddle board and took turns paddling till dusk. We cannot remember what restaurants we went into as we just go into any store we happen to stop by and fancy. We can hardly move our limbs from the day's activities.

Malumpati Cold Spring

Content: We left Boracay at 10am. We parked our cars at the Caticlan Jetty Port, there is actually carpark for a fee at Caticlan if you are bringing a car. For tourists, I suggest hiring a van with a driver and these could be pre-arranged so as to minimize hassle. Our next destination was at Malumpati Cold Springs and we booked the 2 villas at El Cielo Riverfront Villas through Facebook. You can also search them through hotel online facilities. This place is around 1 hour and a half from Caticlan by car. Each villa provide quiet privacy, 2 bedrooms, bathroom with hot and cold showers, a kitchenette which allows you to cook, dining area, garden and a terrace overlooking the cold spring. We contacted the resort staff to prepare lunch beforehand and they were amazing and the price was really very affordable. We had chicken, pork, fish soup and fruits in season (mango and watermelon). Lunch cost was estimated to be at $4 each person. The villa can be accessed by a hanging bridge and is located right in the cold spring area. You pay a minimal environmental fee to get inside the spring area.

Content: The spring water was cold and clean and we swam for an hour or two. We really loved the place. Dinner was also prepared by the staff and since we had leftovers from lunch, we had them reheated. Night time was quiet with only nature humming in the background. It was beautiful.

Content: We took the water tubing activity where we rode on rubber floaters from upstream to downstream. We really had a wonderful time. It was very safe activity as each guest has her/his own local lifeguard. We swam after in the big pool area where a group of divers showed their skill. It was an amazing experience.

Malumpati Cold Spring

Content: This place was magical. If given another time, we will definitely come back again. We checked out at 11:30am and with the help of the resort staff we pre-booked a lunch at a nearby beach resort.

Rosepoint Beach

Pandan, Rosepoint Beach

Content: Lunch was mostly seafood. We left around 2pm as our trip back to Iloilo City was a 3 and a half hours drive. You can also go back to Manila via the Caticlan airport as it is just a 30 minute drive. But since you are in Panay Island, why not visit Iloilo City and the provinces? It's worth a look. I will show you the next Panay Island itinerary in my succeeding posts. Till then. I have videos in IG @barefoot_yve. You can check them out too.
