Ölüdeniz Sahil

Content: I arrived in Ölüdeniz (literally translated as “Dead Sea” due to its calm waters even during storms) famously known as Blue Lagoon, a small neighborhood and beach resort in the Fethiye district of Muğla province on the Turquoise Coast of Turkey at 9:00AM, after a short flight from Istanbul to Dalaman airport. My friends were already there and they have rented a car for our next days road trip on the amazing Turquoise Coast of Turkey. We had a Turkish breakfast at Oyster Beach Lounge Bar, which is right on the beach. Being familiar with Turkish breakfast, I would say this breakfast was not great not terrible but this place is more of a lounge place for afternoon/night drinks so I can understand why breakfast was not as amazing as I expected.

Content: After our breakfast, we decided to go paragliding in Ölüdeniz, reputedly the best site in the world to fly pargliders cross-country in both solo and tandem modes and also the highest tandem paragliding spot in the world (1957m). I must tell you this activity was so much worth it and I would definitely recommend it to everyone who wants to have a travel experience of a lifetime. The journey to take off point is an experience in itself. We took a 50 minute 'jeep safari', which was actually a mini van from Ölüdeniz beach and we took in the extraordinarily beautiful Turkish mountainside scenery. Even if we booked directly from the Gravity Tandem Paragliding company shop on the beach, during the high season, it’s recommended to book in advance. Note: 1. When you book your flight the price will not include a photo/video package. These are arranged separately between you and your pilot who makes a separate commision from selling them. 2. Two of the oldest and most trusted companies on the beach are Sky Sports Paragliding and Gravity Tandem Paragliding but Reaction and Focus are also two good companies to consider. Nevertheless, pretty much all the companies in Ölüdeniz are a good choice because they are all regulated and have experienced pilots.

First stop was the famous Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi), one of the most magical bays and Turkey’s hidden gems. The Butterfly Valley in Turkey is the ultimate destination for those who are searching for something a little more stripped back, connected to nature, and away from the crowds. Note: Be aware that there are only two routes to get there: by foot, or by boat. We choose the boat route and it was fantastic.

Content: After we delighted ourselves with the Butterfly Valley, we continued our boat trip to St. Nicholas Island. Our stay in Ölüdeniz was not quite complete without a visit to the island named after St. Nicholas or otherwise known as Santa Claus. Legend may have it that he came from the snowy North but he lived and died just down the coast. I personally liked the scattered in impressive ruins island which is worth the exploration Tip: There is a small entrance fee, and boats selling pancakes, ice creams and waters sports, so bring some money with you and don't forget your camera.

With origins in the 14th century, Kayaköy was forcefully abandoned at the end of the Greco-Turkish War when a population exchange meant that Muslims and Christians were exchanged between Greece and Turkey. Right at the entrance there is a cute old lady who is doing the most delicious gözleme I’ve ever had. Tip: Don’t miss out on these fresh delicious savory Turkish stuffed turnover, known as ‘gözleme’ in this place rarely visited by tourists.

Content: There is no trip to Turkey without trying the national drink ‘raki’, otherwise known as ‘Lion’s milk’, made of twice-distilled grapes and anise. It’s usually served with seafood or meze and what a better place to have this authentic experience than a port city. Raki is serious business in Turkey. It's the go-to spirit for celebrating a promotion or a birthday or for muting the pain of a job loss or the end of a relationship. Note: Raki is usually drank early in the evening with friends and it’s an amazing match with cold fish (especially oily fish as mackerel and mullet). Melon and cheese are also good, so are salted almonds and later in the meal, goes well with meat kebabs How to drink raki: Some people drink raki straight (it’s then served with chilled water in a separate glass and referred to as sek); but most drink it mixed with chilled water in which case it turns cloudy. Often, especially if it’s hot, ice is also added. Tip: If you clink glasses with fellow drinkers, clink with the bottom of your glass – if you use the top it tells your companion that you think you are superior to them. If you knock the table lightly with your glass it indicates that there is someone you are thinking of who you wish was there – rather a nice tradition, that.

The area is famous for a carbonate mineral left by the flowing water and there is so much ancient history and imagery surrounding Pamukkale. Tip: 1. Be careful when walking barefoot near the travertine pools as the white stones can be quite slippery 2. Bring a good pair of sunglasses. The white limestone is so bright during the day that the glare could hurt your eyes if you don’t protect them.

We stayed at this cute place at a walking distance from city center and I loved it: staff, amenities, they were all perfect. Content: Olympos, which means “high mountain” is considered one of the most significant city in ancient Lycia. The area is under protection due to its natural and historic importance, making it an earthly bit of paradise. Protection means, no resorts, no luxury hotels, but cute little shacks and tree houses instead. I enjoyed the vibes and the many relics from ancient times on the way to the beach, a popular place among nature lovers. You can also go to Olympos Beach by following the narrow road next to the ruins along the the crystal clear Akca stream. Tips: 1. Do not miss the chance to camp in one of Turkey’s most beautiful beaches and to watch the sea turtles. 2. Since Olympos Beach is located in the ancient city of Olympos, you can visit the beach only if you buy a ticket for the ancient city of Olympos. The distance from the ticket office to the beach is a few hundred meters on foot.
