Content: The search for beautiful multicultural cities brought us to Bosnia. Bosnia and Herzegovina are some of the least visited places moreover popular for their history, culture and nature. After the visit, I could realise the fact that it was the offbeat region in Balkan. We landed at Sarajevo Airport, a major airport located at the heart of the city of Sarajevo. The information desk inside the complex was very helpful to plan our trip. The Croatia Airlines and Turkish Airlines were relatively affordable flights into Sarajevo. We picked a taxi from the airport to our accommodation.

Content: The way towards the hotel surprised us with its beauty. The city was packed with lots of history, we heard some interesting facts from the driver. Every corner of the street proved it as a country’s young and diverse capital. The hotels in the Old Town were the best place that is within walking distance of many destinations. We chose one of the best four-star properties in the Old town, Hotel Sana. The rooms were very comfortable with a private bathroom. The hotel lobby and the rooms were attractively wood furnished. After settled down at the hotel, we headed to explore the city by evening.

Content: It was the best decision to explore some parts of the city on the first day itself. We planned for a short walk through the historical town of Sarajevo. We simply stroll through some of the main sights around our accommodation. First, we hit a historical bridge that was the most popular point in the city. We walked all the way to the end, the scenery and the view across the Miljacka River were mind-blowing. It was believed that this iconic place was the beginning of the First World War. We passed through the place where Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated.

Gazi Husrev Bey’s Mosque

Content: While roaming around, we stumbled upon another major attraction of the city. It was the city's most famous mosques, Gazi Husrev-bey. We met a Muslim friend just near the mosque, he politely assisted us into the history of the place. It was outstanding in its beautiful architecture. The interior decorations were very attractive with beautiful ceilings and walls.

Clock Tower

Content: We appeared at a clock tower, the oldest tower at the heart of the city. We could see this tower from every corner of the town. It was a simple brick tower but it holds a clock that shows lunar time that is its specification. We passed through a covered Bazar at Gazi Husrev-Beg’s Bezistan.

Content: We headed to explore the main bazaar in the city. Bascarsija Square is a local bazaar that is the hub for main tourist attractions. We simply wandered through the narrow winding streets which were lined with plenty of shops on both sides with many entrances. We found many little cafes and restaurants along the way. Many eateries in the Old Town offered delicious authentic Bosnian food. We had our meal and headed back to the room.

Content: We packed our small backpack with essential things and headed to explore the city of Sarajevo. We could feel the Ottoman influence while walking around the streets. We stopped at a cafe near Bascarsija Square. It was a small place but famous for the delicious burek. It was a perfect idea to start a day with a popular dish in the city. We had meat burek and apple burek, both were delicious. Basically, burek is a baked pastry rolled into a snail-like shape filled with various fillings. We demanded for some toppings that added flavor to the dish.

Content: Then we walked through streets to explore many historical landmarks. We hit Sebilj Brunnen, the iconic landmark in Sarajevo located at the heart of the Square. We saw many tourists wandering around the square with their cameras. It was perfect spot for photography. Then we passed through many attractions including Jewish Synagogue, Cathedral of Sacred Jesus’ Heart, Sarajevo Roses, Hotel Europe, Latin bridge and more. Spotting Latin Bridge on the way was extremely different in sense. There is a museum in front of the Bridge that depicts the history of Sarajevo. The city can be easily accessible through well maintained footpaths.

Content: We strolled through the banks of river Miljacka that flows underneath the Latin Bridge. Along the way we saw other points such as the eternal flame which is the memorial to the military and civilian victims of the Second World War. We relaxed at the Mejdan park for a while where we could enjoy Music Pavilion under the shades of trees.

Content: We had meals from Cevabdzinica Zeljo one of the famous restaurants that serve delicious Cevapi. We had a delicious Balkan style Cevapi served along with bread and onions. We got taste of tomato as a dominating flavour.

Content: We visited the Sarajevo War Tunnel, an underground passage. This place gave a deep emotional feeling. We took an admission ticket which includes an audio tour. They explained the history of the tunnel. We walked through the long public part of the tunnel which featured as the home for the Tunnel Museum. We passed through many signboards that describe the maps and pictures throughout the museum. The museum consists of a couple of rooms and the entrance to the tunnel. It was a perfect visit to learn about the Siege of Sarajevo and the history of the tunnel.

Content: We drove to the next destination which was popular for the beautiful view of the sunset. It was better to visit the Yellow Fortress before the sun sets. The view of the city and sunset over made the entire day memorable. We took many photos on the colourful natural lighting. We visited the cemetery of young victims of the war on the way. We could sit in a wonderful cafe to enjoy the vantage point.

Muvekita

Content: We spend our remaining time at one of the parallel streets Muvekita. The street was packed with many bars and restaurants. We had potato pie which was very unique in taste. The outer dough was very thin and soft the fillings were delicious accompanied by dices of onions. We enjoyed the food and headed back to our room.

Content: We checked out of the hotel after breakfast. We caught a bus from the terminal to the Mostar bus terminal. The journey was very pleasant and scenic- took about 3 hours. The town looks similar to the places in fairy tales. Literally, it is a small city in the Balkan nation that attracts many tourists from different corners.

Content: We checked in to the EDEN Hotel & Spa, located in the centre of the city. It was the ideal place to explore the city on foot. The rooms were clean and comfortable for us. We received a warm welcome from the staffs. They offered wide varieties of services and facilities that made our stay more comfortable. We spend some time in the room enjoying a beautiful panoramic view of the hotel.

Content: By evening we headed to explore Old Town in the city which was full of vibrant things. The streets are very beautiful with stone pathways. We could stop at many points to admire paintings, rugs, carpets, and so on. These cobbled streets were highly packed with a lot of small shops and cafes. The cafes were featured with delicious Turkish coffee which is a must-try item in the city. There is much attraction along the way, we set next day to visit all these main sites. Today we just strolled through the streets and done some shopping.

Content: After the coffee break, we headed to our first destination, Stari Most. The bridge crowed with many people, we stepped into the crowd. It was considered the most iconic site in the city which stands over the Neretva River. There is the option for diving in the bridge, we found many people waiting to see this activity. We faced some divers collecting money from tourists on the bridge for their club. It was truly very interesting to see bridge divers jumping off into the brisk waters of the Neretva.

Content: We waked up and packed some essentials things for the day and headed to explore Old Town. The Old Town is pedestrianised so that we could easily navigate through the streets. We wore comfortable footwear which helped us to walk freely around the cobbled streets. We started with strong caffeine that boosted our energy. We headed to a cafe which was located near to the Hamman Museum in the Old Town. From a local person, we came to know that it was the one and only cafe that offered coffee with their own roasted beans. We met many local people sipping coffee and chatting with friends. It is better to enjoy Bosnian coffee by taking some time.

Content: We walked to the Old Bridge Museum which was located on the east side of the bridge. It was the ideal place to learn about the history of the iconic site. By paying a small amount of entry fee we could walk through the history of the place. We saw great views of the bridge along with the learning features about the architecture and significance of the bridge. Then we walked to another bridge known as Crooked Bridge which separates between the banks of the River Neretva. It seems like a replica of the Stari Most, but a little small in size.

War Photo Exhibition

Content: We visited a historical landmark located on the west side of the Stari Most Bridge. We entered the hall by paying for entry tickets. It was small exhibition that displays various photos from the Bosnia War. These displays gave an excellent outline of the city.

Content: We headed to a stunning mosque found on the other side of the bridge. It was very small in size but most notable for Muslims in Mostar. We stopped at the prayer area for a while and walked over to the courtyard. The interior of the mosque admired us with its beauty, the dome and coloured window decorations were most impressive. We climbed to the top of the minaret for lovely glimpses of the Old Town. We headed to grab our lunch, along the way we encountered some Ottoman Houses.

Food House

Content: There was no shortage of restaurants, we found Food House as a less crowded one. It was a small restaurant that serves typical Bosnia cuisine. Their menu featured many wraps and stuffed dishes. We had Dolma, one of the basic dishes in Bosnia. It was stuffed capsicums with rice and meat. The presentation was great, they plated stuffed capsicum topped with fresh tomatoes and coriander leaves along with tomato sauce.

Museum of War and Genocide Victims

Content: After lunch, we headed to the next stop to learn about the history in detail, the Museum of War and Genocide Victims. History lovers definitely like this museum as it presents many facts about the Bosnian war. The museum hall has an exhibition of history and causes of the conflict.

Content: We stopped at Sniper Tower for a while to get some photos. It was also a major historical landmark in the city. It is more famous for its unique construction and design.

Spanish Square

Content: We walked towards the west side of the city where we hit a little square. It was a very beautiful place to rest by enjoying the sunset. Along the way, we saw the Old Gymnasium building a great sight to see. We spend the rest of the time in the square wandering around.

Content: We waked up with full energy and headed to grab our breakfast from the hotel. As the day was planned as an adventurous we choose a healthy breakfast. We rented a private car for the day and headed to Kravice waterfalls. Once we got to the road it was very easy to drive ourselves to the destination. Day tour services and taxi services were also available but renting a car and driving ourselves was the better option.

Content: We reached a huge parking area right before the entrance. The drive to Kravice Waterfalls was very scenic and enjoyable. We could feel the real beauty of the landscape of Bosnia. We paid our entrance fee at the entrance and headed to the main site. We chose to walk down the stairs to the main falls whereas walk through the long gravel road and tourist tram were other available options.

Content: We walked enthusiastically to the base of the falls where we could swim peacefully. The walk was very pleasant, we could hear the sound of crashing water. The waterfalls network consists of all basic amenities for the sake of visitors. We found clean changing stations with drapes and a big toilet block with many booths. Our waterproof camera helped us to take glorious snaps. We spend hours in the water and enjoyed the actual beauty. We climbed up to some rocks to get close to the waterfalls where we found many mini rock pools. Swimming in the crystal clear freshwater was the best part of the trip. It was a little tricky to swim across to reach the other side of the falls. We wandered around the area to explore more.

Restaurant

Content: We found only a few numbers of eateries within the area. We found a small restaurant just right to the lake. They served varieties of Bosnian dishes along with various beverages. The food was good at a reasonable price.

Content: Kayaking is another popular activity in Kravice. We rented a kayak at a reasonable price. They offered about 30 minutes ride in the water. We could simply plunge into the natural gem. We headed back to our accommodation full of memories.

Day 5 - 14 Jun 2018

Fountain Shelter

Content: We found The Fountain Shelter as one of the best restaurants in the city. Their menu featured many traditional Bosnian dishes. Their vegetarian options were exceptional. We had a Bosnian doughnut and chicken side dish, both were delicious. The most striking feature about the dish we noticed was its flavour. Next day we headed back to the airport and board our flight back to hometown. The trip was memorable.
