Content: The Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) in northern Europe are, for me, a fascinating trio. Not a lot of travelers would normally put these countries in their first ‘Eurotrip’ itinerary — because they’re not as ‘established’ like Paris or Amsterdam — and yet, these off-the-beaten-path destinations are absolutely gorgeous and “untouched”!

Content: There are several cruise lines that travel from Helsinki to Tallinn every day, and the prices across all these providers don’t differ as much. To do so, we needed to cross the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea) from Helsinki to Tallinn by ferry. Make no mistake though, the Tallinn Helsinki Ferry was, in fact, a huge cruise ship, with various facilities and entertainment to keep anyone occupied for the two hours trip. You can visit the restaurant, the bar, the shop or you can spend some time on the deck to enjoy some crisp, fresh air.

The Old Town is indeed so charming and medieval that you will feel as if you have stepped back in time – to an age of cobblestone alleyways, colourful architecture and a labyrinth of small boutique stores selling everything from antiques to kitsch souvenirs.

Content: Indulge in coffee During the Soviet Union rule, it was difficult to get roasted beans in Estonia. The most available were either instant coffee or simply beans in their raw, green state. This resulted in a lot of people using their imagination to roast their own coffee. Since entrepreneurship of any kind—such as opening up a roastery—was not allowed, roasting one’s own coffee was the better option to the instant one.

Content: Winding my way up the cobblestone alleyways, I soon enough found myself in the centre of town. My first stop was the Old Town Square – which was bustling and alive by the time I arrived around 2.00pm. Tallinn’s charming Old Town is the best preserved Medieval old town in Northern Europe. In 1997, the Old Town was inducted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Content: The Estonian city of Tallinn, which is the capital and most important city of the country, has a complex history, especially with its neighboring countries. This legacy can be seen in national culture, but also in architecture and even religion. One of its most beautiful places, but also one of the most controversial, is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Currently, there are churches and cathedrals are dedicated to this symbolic Russian character in different parts of Europe, with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Estonia being one of the most notorious. This great cathedral was named after the Orthodox saint, Alexander Nevsky, who was a brave Russian warrior.

Content: The Walls of Tallinn are the medieval defensive walls constructed around the city of Tallinn in Estonia. With 1.9 km of its original city wall and 20 defensive towers wall still standing, Tallinn boasts one of Europe's best preserved medieval fortifications. The oldest sections of Tallinn's city wall were built in the 13th century. During the next three centuries, it became one of the largest and strongest defence systems in entire Northern Europe. More than half of the magnificent defence system has been preserved as a city wall - this includes 1.85 km of the wall, 26 defence towers, 2 gates and fragments of two front gates. Patkuli viewing platform is a good place for examining the city wall, and a number of towers are open for visitors. You have a chance to walk on a small section of the wall that connects the Nunne, Sauna and Kuldjala towers. The wall has a wonderful view of the Old Town and Toompea.
