Content: Santorini is a beautiful island escape in the Aegean Ocean. It’s know for its whitewashed buildings and iconic blue domed churches. Whether you’re adding Santorini as a stop into your Greece itinerary or are planning a week’s stay on the island, here is an itinerary to get you started in your planning.

Red beach

Content: The best way to start a beach vacation is to get in the water. We took a bus to Red Beach, where we joined a catamaran cruise that took us to White Beach, past Fira, and ended in Oia. Plenty of sightseeing opportunities, and we had some anchored stops for snorkeling, swimming, and enjoying the water.

Goddess Lethe

Content: We chose to stay in an Airbnb Santorini cave house in Oia, called Goddess Lethe. It’s one of those white washed homes you see built right into the hill, with amazing caldera views. The location was great. Many steps are involved getting to and from the main shops, but the extra steps were absolutely worth it. We had a kitchenette where we cooked a pasta dinner to enjoy out on the patio.

Content: Waking up to a coastal sunrise in Santorini is unreal. The golden morning sun spreads across the orange coated buildings, slowly turning them white as it rises into the sky. We also had many friendly feral cats visit us at our Airbnb. Santorini has many feral cats, and I found them all to be very cute and friendly. The lucky ones sat in my patio because they knew they would get snacks.

Skiza Cafe

Content: We had breakfast at Skiza Cafe, overlooking the water. The breakfast scramble with fresh feta coffee was amazing, but combined with those views, it was a breakfast that can’t be beat.

Content: We started the trek down from Oia to Amoudi Bay. It’s a nice hike to take in the morning, but I wouldn’t recommend it in peak afternoon heat. It’s about 300 steps down, with coastal views the entire way. We found an old abandoned church midway down, which was absolutely fascinating. Great spot for photography, and perfect for resting and enjoying some ocean views.

Ammoudi Fish Tavern

Content: We made it down to Amoudi Bay to enjoy the fish tavern and other restaurants. It’s such a picturesque bay with tons of fresh seafood. Tip: During peak summer months, you can ask your restaurant to arrange a taxi to take you back up the hill if you don’t want to walk the 300 steps back up to Oia.

Venetsanos Winery

Content: We tasted some incredible local wines in Santorini, and some of the best were done via a wine tasting tour. Our tour included 3 different wineries, some with amazing views overlooking the ocean. The local wines of Santorini come from grapes vine-ripened from volcanic soil, giving them unique flavors and amazing aromas.

Sunset Oia

Content: The one thing all visitors to Oia Santorini must do is enjoy the sunset. Oia is known for having some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. I was lucky enough to experience a clear sky for sunset, and it did not disappoint. The island’s unique positioning gives you a wide open view of the sea, a perfect landscape on which to watch the setting sun.

Content: After a day at the beach we took the bus back to Oia to enjoy another amazing sunset, this time from our Airbnb patio, which faces the caldera. We still got to witness the sky change amazing colors as the light faded into night. We had a home cooked dinner at our Airbnb again, which is always a nice hack for saving money on trip.

Content: We took the bus to Imerovigli, where we embarked on the Caldera View Hike back to Oia. It took us about 3 hours at a leisurely pace, and we took some time to stop for breakfast at one of the cafes along the way. This hike is fairly easy, but is pretty long. So be sure to bring plenty of water, wear comfortable shoes, and get started in the morning to beat the heat.

Castle of Oia

Content: The Castle of Agios Nikolaus in Oia is an awesome historical spot to visit. Not much of the original castle is left standing, but it provided an awesome viewpoint of the ocean, and is a great place to watch the sunset. There is a lock fence up top where couples can place a lock as a symbol of their love in a place that will forever see the beautiful ocean sunsets of Oia.
