Day 1 - 12 Mar 2018
Content: This hostel worked well for our large college group. We had about 14 people on the trip. Many of our excursions even picked us up/dropped us off directly from the hostel. It also felt like a very safe area (although all of Iceland felt very safe).
Content: The city of Reykjavik is very walkable which is nice. The church is about a 15 minute walk from Bus Hostel.
Content: Food is a little pricey in Iceland, but we had some good pastries and beverages for breakfast at this place. Right across the street from Hallgrimskirkja.
Content: I’d recommend taking the first day easy if flying from the US. Jet lag can be very overwhelming the first day. You could spend the day just exploring the city of Reykjavik. There’s tons of street and building art to admire.
Content: We ate dinner at this noodle place and it was pretty good!
Day 2 - 13 Mar 2018
Content: If you’re looking for a place to eat any time of the day, you have to stop by Eldur and Is. This little crêpe place is delicious and offers both sweet and savory fillings & toppings.
Day 2 - 13 Mar 2018
Content: Even though it’s a very touristy spot, the Blue Lagoon is 100% worth the visit. We got one of the basic packages that included a towel, a drink and a mud face mask. One thing to know: You have to shower before entering the lagoon. They provide a special shampoo and a leave-in conditioner for your hair. The minerals in the water are good for your skin, but damaging to your hair so be sure to put your hair up and leave in their conditioner! There’s also a spout in the middle of the lagoon where you can drink fresh water straight from a glacier!
Day 3 - 14 Mar 2018
Content: We used Reykjavik Excursions for all of our day trips and they were wonderful! The first excursion we went on was a “small group experience” to Iceland’s Golden Circle. This route included Geysir Goethermal Area, Gullfoss waterfall, Thingveiller National Park and Kerid Crater. Our tour guide also brought us to a bonus waterfall! Our tour guide’s name was Leif so if you happen to book with Reykjavik Excursions, request Leif (if he still works there). He was amazing!!
Day 3 - 14 Mar 2018
Content: On the way back to Reykjavik from the tour, our guide stopped at the Hveragerdi Regional Information Center so we could get out and stretch, but it ended up being much more than that. This little center actually has an earthquake simulator so you can feel what the 2008 earthquake felt like in that area. (It’s actually a little terrifying because you’re in a pitch black box that shakes 😅). But it’s interesting to experience! There are also some souvenirs sold at the center, and an area where you can grab something to eat.
Day 3 - 14 Mar 2018
Content: We had some drinks and snacks in this pub. It was a great experience! Here you can try local delicacies like horse, minke whale and puffin. The staff was very friendly. The bar was covered in Polaroids and they let us to take one to add to their collection. (So if you go, look for our Polaroid!)
Day 4 - 15 Mar 2018
Content: On the 4th day we did another Reykjavik Excursions day tour, this time to Iceland’s South Shore. This trip is jam packed and SO worth it. One of the first stops is Skógafoss waterfall.
Content: Other stops on the tour include Seljalandsfoss waterfall, the little town of Vik, Reynisfjara black sand beach and Solheimajokull glacier. I would highly recommend this tour!
Day 4 - 15 Mar 2018
Content: If you’re looking for a good night out, definitely head to Lebowski Bar! This retro American-themed bar is the perfect place to dance the evening away. While you’re there, don’t forget to try a shot of Brennivin - Iceland’s signature liquor nicknamed “Black Death.”
Day 5 - 16 Mar 2018
Content: If you have the chance to see a show inside the Harpa, or even just to walk around inside, it’s worth it! The architecture of the building is so interesting and beautiful.
Content: Just a short walk from the Harpa is the Sun Voyager. It’s a beautiful view across the water, and the sculpture itself is really interesting!
Content: And of course, if you do anything in Iceland, it has to be to try and see the Northern Lights. Our tour kept being rescheduled because of the weather conditions, but we were finally able to see them and it was unbelievable! (Again, this tour was with Reykjavik Excursions).
Day 6 - 17 Mar 2018
Content: We only stayed 5 days in Iceland, but had we stayed one or two more I would’ve loved to have done another day tour to Snæfellsnes National Park or to the plane wreck on the south shore. So if you’re in Iceland for 6 or 7 days, I would highly recommend checking one of those two things out!
