So, these guys are able to take care of the transport from the airport (which is on the main island, Malta) all the way to the small island, Gozo. They also have connections to many traditional farmhouses around the island, so in regards to transport and accommodation - they'll sort you out.

Content: We started off our first day with a bang! We rented an extensive jeep safari for a full-day. We felt that this was the best way to get to know Malta's neighbouring island Gozo. We surely weren’t disappointed by our decision! We got to enjoy a 7-hour jeep tour around the island with a driver, we did a lot of sightseeing along the coast and lunch was provided for as well.

Ġgantija

Ix-Xagħra, Ġgantija

Content: This is a megalithic temple complex (two temples) from the Neolithic, the earliest of the Megalithic Temples of Malta. And listen to this, they are older than the pyramids of Egypt - built before the famous standing stones at Stonehenge. And nowadays, these two temples make up this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage site with an extraordinary history. It’s definitely not something you get to see every day so definitely wouldn’t recommend missing it!

Calypso Cave

Xaghra, Calypso Cave

Content: The view from up here is truly incredible and breath-taking- overlooking the red sands of Gozo's finest beach, Ramla l-Ħamra. Fun fact: Allegedly, the cave was referred to by Homer in ‘The Odyssey’. It is even believed that Gozo is the island of Ogygia and the cave to be the one where the beautiful nymph Calypso kept Odysseus as a “prisoner of love” for seven years.

Ta’ Kola Windmill

Xaghra, Ta’ Kola Windmill

Content: We loved how cute this windmill looked so we really wouldn’t recommend skipping it. Besides it has such an interesting story behind it: It actually dates back to the Knights’ period, back in 1725. It seems to have been built of poor-quality stone and mortar and had to be reconstructed later on in the 1780s. Basically, here’s how the process worked out. When the wind was right for the mill to operate, the miller would blow through a triton-shell to let everyone know. Villagers would bring their grain to be ground into flour. In fact, the heavy millstones can still be seen at the top of the mill linked to the central milling mechanism, around which, are the rooms where the miller lived and worked. On the ground floor is the workshop with a vast array of historic tools, some of which were manufactured by the owners of the mill. On the first floor, the living quarters of the miller and his family, have been recreated using traditional furniture and Gozitan crafts. You can visit the miller’s dining room, bedrooms, and kitchen which is equipped with traditional utensils and cooking ware rarely seen today.

Ramla Beach

, Ramla Beach

Content: Located at the bottom of a valley on the northern side of the island, and overlooked by the village of Xagħra, Ramla bay is one of the most popular beaches here. The sand has a reddish hue and this long and wide beach is set on a curving bay surrounded by rocky cliffs. Swimming is safe here and it’s popular with families, locals, and snorkelers. The water is pretty shallow, getting deeper gradually, making it a good location to swim safely with kids. Besides, it is the only bay in Gozo carrying the Blue Flag status – which means that there will be a lifeguard on duty.

Content: For an eventful afternoon, we would start by visiting Ninu's Cave, a cave formed in upper coralline limestone. Fun fact: this was discovered by local resident in 1888 while digging a well under a private house. And it’s very close to the next underground feature, Xerri's Grotto.

Content: This is another cave portraying small caverns with stalactites and stalagmites, this time hidden beneath an ordinary home in Xagħra. And this one was also discovered in 1924 by the current owners’ grandfather while he was digging a well. It is illuminated by electric lights so we could easily see the rock formations. Entry is via a 10m spiral staircase, built into the original well shaft. And in the cave, you can take a circular tour of about 30m past some very pretty calcified formations 25 cm to 1m tall. There are also some interesting formations, which have developed as a result of calcification of tree roots. We were shown speleothems (stalactites/stalagmites) resembling a tortoise and a giraffe amongst some others.

Tal-Mixta Cave

Nadur, Tal-Mixta Cave

Content: There’s no better place where you can spend sunset on the island. We’re still blown away by the beauty of this place because honestly, the views are stunning. In terms of finding it, you'll eventually come to a bit of a dusty undeveloped road and need to park before the "PRIVATE NO ENTER" sign. You can keep walking down the road beyond this sign, and you'll eventually get to a white house. Go just beyond this, and then on your left are the stairs leading down to the cave.

Content: Café culture rules in Victoria! Although it’s quite small, the town is crammed with so many excellent bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from. Honestly, it was great for us, especially for us in the morning or whenever we needed a caffeine boost. Here, we tried an espresso laced with grappa because we truly felt the need of an extra boost.

Citadel

Ir-Rabat Għawdex, Citadel

Content: This is a fortress in Victoria (the island’s capital) which rises steeply above the surrounding countryside, making it visible from almost all the Island. The Citadel owes its roots to the late medieval era, but the hill has been settled since Neolithic times. A little bit about its history - the Citadel served as a sanctuary from attack by Barbary corsairs and Saracens. At several times during Gozo’s history, these raiders took its population into slavery. After the Great Siege of 1565, the Knights set about re-fortifying the Citadel to provide refuge and defence against further attack. Until 1637, the Gozitan population was required by law to spend their nights within the Citadel for their own safety. In later, more peaceful times, this restriction was lifted and people settled below its walls, creating the prosperous town of Rabat, now known as Victoria. It’s a pleasure to simply saunter around the labyrinthine cobbled streets within the old town, take in the great views of the sea, coast and surrounding scenery, and contemplate in the cool of the 13th-century Cathedral of the Assumption.

Content: Victoria is not just the geographic heart of Gozo. It’s also the centre of everyday activity. It manages to combine the bustle of its market and shops with a relaxed and sociable atmosphere. It is a great place to watch the Islanders go about their day, especially when the main market square, It-Tokk, comes to life. So, getting to this church would be an experience of its own, going around Victoria’s market and narrow winding streets, while finding everything from delicious fresh produce, cheeses and wines, to antiques, craft goods, fishing nets and knitwear. Fun fact: This is also known as the marble church, it’s completely covered in marble. Along with gold and bronze gilt, the ancient wooden statue of Saint George and the painted scenes on the ceiling and dome, it’s a real spirit lifter. Plus, there’s a great little piazza outside for a quick post-mass cappuccino and delicious pastry with friends and family.

Content: To set off the day with a swim we chose the beautiful bay of Hondoq. It’s a small sandy beach with crystal clear waters which make this a popular swimming place, particularly amongst locals. And while being here, we suggest taking a short walk/swim towards a hidden beach called Bamberin Beach. We loved it – it’s like a miniature fjord with aquamarine waters and caves. Besides, it’s mostly quiet which makes going there 100% worth it.

Content: For the rest of the evening, we thought of choosing a wonderful location to stroll around. And this was the one! We got to see this lagoon of seawater (linked to the Mediterranean Sea) through an opening formed by this narrow natural arch. On one side there is a stony beach with some cute fishermen's huts and some fishing boats (luzzijiet) pulled up. If you’re planning to swim here, the bottom of the lagoon is quite shallow and mostly made of pebbles and rocks. But if you exit through the tunnel towards the open sea, then the floor should drop away to a depth of up to 35m. Perhaps if you’re just up for a quick tour, then some of the boats are used to take visitors through the archway and then for a tour of the nearby cliffs and other sites, mainly to the Fungus Rock.
