Malta International Airport (MLA) (Ajruport Internazzjonali ta' Malta)

Luqa, Malta International Airport (MLA) (Ajruport Internazzjonali ta' Malta)

Content: We met my parents for Thanksgiving in Malta! From a walking food tour, cooking class, and finding whiskey and gin bars in old medival streets from centuries ago, we had our fill of great food and family even if no turkey was involved. The history was astonishing, filming locations cool to see, stunning cliff views, and very friendly people! Airport was easy to get through, and getting Euros in cash is recommended. Took a taxi to our wonderful AirBnb to settle in for the evening.

Content: STUNNING is the word to describe this airBnb we stayed at. We’ve never stayed in a shared place before with private rooms, and we are so glad that we did! The owners are architects and doctors, and the doctor is a secret pastry chef in the making—he bakes almost every day and leaves out so many goodies in the shared space to have an all inclusive breakfast in the mornings. They also show a portion of the large fridge where they bought little milk/juice, cheese, bread for us, and some extra space in case we wanted to go grocery shopping around the corner. The balcony itself opens up to the ocean, and the place is modern, trendy, and immaculate. The owners give a great balance of personal space and will also check on and socialize with a drink in the evening and discuss worldly travel adventures—they’re such a delight! Laura’s parents split the cost of the airBnb with us through the week, so they had one bedroom/private bathroom and we had the other bedroom/private bathroom. The owners have their own wing to themselves to keep separate, and the maid arrives every morning to keep things clean and even do a little laundry for you if you need it! The bus stops are right around the corner and easy to take us to nearby towns and site seeing spots, and plenty of shopping and restaurants are walking distance as well!

The suspended rock bridge has unfortunately since collapsed into the sea after a bad storm, but it’s still worth taking a small boat for a couple bucks through the cave and to see the magnificent aqua waters and white cliffs around.

The old fountains, seeing where Napoleon used to walk, imagining all the knights that rode through these stone roads, and looking up at the ornate wooden Mashrabiyas where Arabic women could look out onto the streets without being seen. Outdoor cafes, shopping for crusade cross jewelry, and a glimpse of the sea could be seen from almost every corner. We loved it.

It’s one longggg street full of restaurants and unique bars, like a bar fully dedicated to gin or to whiskey or wine. To enter each bar, usually the steps go down and you have to duck your head under a stone arch and you feel like you were sent back in time. Each of these little areas used to be shops and brothels from centuries ago, and now are converted into trendy watering holes. We ended up going back to this street almost every night because the experience was so unique!

This was followed up with taking sustainable local fish where we learned how to fillet and cook a special way in the pan. Content: We downloaded the Bolt app, similar to Uber, to get us a direct/fast route to Cirkewwa where the small ferry is. This boat takes about 10 people and cost is about 10 euros round trip. Takes about 30 minutes to get to Comino/Blue Lagoon and then they have boats leaving every hour or so to take you back when you’re ready. It’s a small island but the crystal clear water is what you go for! A bit of a tourist trap with the expensive pineapple drinks and junk foods, and depending on the time of day it can get crowded, so we had to secure ourselves a spot on the cliff overlooking the water. There is a small building for restrooms to change, but I would recommend going there with your swimsuit already under your clothes because of how crowded it can be.
