Day 1 - 1 Feb 2020

Tromsø Airport

Tromsø, Tromsø Airport

Content: It took us a day of travelling to get from our home country to our destination. Departing from Malta, we first landed in Munich, took another flight to Oslo, and finally took off from Oslo and landed in Tromso. Immediately greeted by a cover of white snow, we knew this holiday was going to be spectacular. Remember, Tromso is inside the arctic circle, which means it will be extremely cold in winter. Make sure to bring appropriate clothes, footwear and equipment with you.

Content: Although we were exhausted, we were also super excited to see the city covered in snow! A short walk from the apartment led us to the city centre and the Tromso Cathedral - the world’s northernmost Lutheran cathedral.

Tromsø Bridge

Content: This was our first full day on the island, and we planned to explore as much as possible. Coming from a country with a mediterranean climate, we were very much enjoying our time in the snow. Needless to say it was super cold, but this did not stop us from walking the Tromso bridge - thus crossing from the island to the mainland. It took us around 15 mins to reach the other end.

Arctic Cathedral

Content: The Arctic Cathedral is straight ahead as soon as you arrive on the opposite side. It is truly a unique landmark.

Fjellheisen

Tromsø, Fjellheisen

Content: A 15-minute walk led us to the lower station of Fjellheisen - a cable car which takes you from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen in just four minutes. We lunched at the small restaurant at the top - one can also enjoy some panoramic views of the city and fjords. The mountain top is also accessible for walking around, and also a starting point for many skiers.

Storsteinen

Tromsø, Storsteinen

Content: With the sun setting at a relatively early time during this time of year, it is important to keep an eye out for the northern lights which could show up at any time! The weather on this particular night was not in our favour, as clouds covered up most of the sky. We waited for around 1hr 30m before we decided to head back to the island.

Rorbua Pub

Tromsø, Rorbua Pub

Content: We made a stop at Rorbua pub for a hot drink - perfect for this kind of weather :)

Content: We started the day with a visit to Polaria, the world’s most northerly aquarium. We had the opportunity of seeing the bearded seals at close range during a feeding session, and then spent some time in the panoramic cinema where they were showing films about the northern lights and Arctic wilderness in general. We did not spend more than three hours there in total.

Peppes Pizza - Tromsø

Day 3 - 3 Feb 2020

Camp Tamok

Øverbygd, Camp Tamok

Content: Upon arrival we were provided a hot meal, warm drink and insulated clothing in preparation for our hike. All throughout our hike, the weather was again not in our favour, and so we were unsuccessful in seeing the northern lights once more. The excursion was however very entertaining. We hiked in the forest and even got to meet some friendly huskies :)

Content: We had also booked another visit to Camp Tamok for a snowmobile expedition the following day. We learnt that we could have stayed the night at the camp instead of travelling back and forth, and this would have saved us some time. Nonetheless, we reached Camp Tamok by 10am for the excursion which started by 10:30am. We were offered helmets and insulated clothing once again, and then given a quick demonstration on how to drive the snowmobiles. Our guide instructed us to follow him to various areas where we could safely drive the snowmobiles ourselves, and spent almost two hours doing so. If you enjoy speed and adrenaline (like us), you absolutely must drive a snowmobile. So much fun! Upon arrival back to the camp, we were offered a warm lunch and hot drinks once again.

Day 4 - 4 Feb 2020

Alfheimvegen

Tromsø, Alfheimvegen

Content: We headed back to Tromso and our apartment, and decided to spend some time outdoors with the hope of seeing the lights. Although the sky was relatively clear, our chances were slightly low since there was a lot of light pollution from the city. To our surprise, a ray of green emerged in the sky right on top of us for a few moments! We managed to get a few photos of this memorable moment :)

Content: Presumably our last excursion for this holiday, we spent our morning dog sledding, on an excursion organised by Arctic Travel Company . It is important to note here that the dogs were being kept in excellent condition and are well taken care of. In fact, the dogs were super energetic and excited to get going :). This was such an awesome experience, but remember, you have to help the dogs along. So make sure you are in good shape!

Fjellheisen

Tromsø, Fjellheisen

Content: In the afternoon, we headed back to Fjellheisen for another attempt at seeing the northern lights.

Day 7 - 7 Feb 2020

Tromsø

Tromsø, Tromsø

Content: Having had no luck with the lights the previous night either, we booked an impromptu northern lights minibus chase in the morning with Chasing Lights. In retrospect, this should have been our first attempt at seeing the lights, since the tour guides here were expert in the ideal locations according to (constantly changing) weather conditions.

Location: Helligskogen

Day 7 - 7 Feb 2020

Helligskogen fjellstue Nilsen Overelv

Helligskogen, Helligskogen fjellstue Nilsen Overelv

Content: We left Tromso in the afternoon, and the plan was to head closer to the Finnish border as soon as possible, as the guide explained that the weather forecast promised the best conditions in the area early in the night. After two hours of driving, we stopped in an area called Hellingskogen. We were talking about stars and constellations while waiting for the lights to show up, when suddenly some strong northern lights activity showed up! The display lasted just for a few minutes, but the lights performed what's called ‘The Dancing lights’, with changing shapes and displays.

Day 7 - 7 Feb 2020

Keinovuopio

Muonio, Keinovuopio

Content: We proceeded to cross the border and try our luck close to a village called Keinovuopio. We were served lunch there while we waited for the lights to show up again, however the sky became overcast very quickly and we decided to head home.
