Content: The North Coast 500 usually starts in Inverness but we decided to stop in Beauly, a lovely village in the highlands, just a 30 minutes drive from Inverness. It took us 2 hours and 30 minutes to get here from Aberdeen, in the North East of Scotland. I recommend visiting the Beauly Priory, a Valliscaulian monastic community, founded in 1230.

Content: At just 15 minutes from Beauly you can find The Rogie Falls. The lovely walk to the waterfalls takes only 5 minutes from the free car park.

Content: We then headed to Gairloch, just one hour from the Rogie Falls where we stayed overnight at the Gairloch Hotel, just in front of Gairloch beach.

Content: Five minutes from the Gairloch Hotel there is another nice beach where to relax and unwind.

Content: We then drove to another lovely area called Badachro. It took us not even 10 minutes to get here.

Content: On our second day we went to Ullapool, a nice village of 1,500 inhabitants in the Scottish Highlands. There are lots of activities that you could do here such as boat tours to spot the wildlife or various hikes. This was the view from our hotel.

Content: The first place we tried as we had heard so many great things about it was the Seafood Shack. We queued for more or less one hour to get two haddock wraps. It was certainly worth it though.

Content: We then headed to the Ardvreck Castle on the Loch Assynt. This is a ruined castle from the 16th century. Very beautiful and scenic place.

Content: For dinner we booked a table at the Ceilidh Place. Great atmosphere and good food.

Content: On our third day we went to the Achmelvich Bay. It is just one hour from Ullapool. This place took us by surprise. We thought we were in some tropical beach. Stunning views. There is the main beach closer to the car park but if you continue to walk to the right you can get to another secret one.

Content: A lady told us to go left as well from the main beach to discover the smallest castle in Europe. I love when people are kind for no reason at all :). It was so lovely.

Content: We then got back to our car, drove for more or less 1 and half hour to get to Durness, further North. Here, we wanted to do several activities but the wind was very strong so we had to act accordingly. We managed to see the beach but just from a distance and for a short while.

Content: We also wanted to do the Golden Eagle Zip Line and the full Smoo Cave tour but again, the wind had other plans for us. We managed to see part of the beautiful Smoo Cave though :)

Content: After a little over 2 hours of driving, we arrived to our final destination for the day. We were staying at this lovely B&B (The Hawthorns B&B) very close to the Castle of Mey ( fans of the tv series “The Crown” will know it for sure).

Content: The next morning we headed to Thurso which is only 20 minutes away from Mey. This is such a lovely town.

Content: At only 10 minutes from Thurso there is Dunnet Head which is the northernmost point on the mainland of Great Britain. The weather was not the best but we managed to enjoy our short visit there nonetheless.

Content: At 30 minutes away there are other must see places. First of all, and one of my favorites, Duncansby Stacks. This is the farthest point by road from Land’s End.

Content: Second of all, John O’ Groats and its famous signpost. This is one end (the North-East tip) of the longest distance between two inhabited British Points on the mainland.

Content: Other 15 minutes by car and you get to Old Keiss Castle. This is private property now so you need to take a little path along the beach on its left to be able to see it a little bit better.

Content: For the night we were staying in Wick, at the Norseman Hotel. To tell you the truth we did not particularly love this town but it’s a good stopping point to visit the Old Keiss Castle and Castle Sinclair.

Content: One very big bonus point for this town though, it is this very good French restaurant called Bord de l’eau restaurant. The owner and cook came to talk to us at the end of the delicious meal we had, and he said that he moved here from France 20 years ago when he met his wife.

Content: Very close to Wick there is Castle Sinclair that, built between 1476 and 1496, overlooks Sinclair Bay. The admission is free and the views spectacular. I loved visiting this castle.

Content: We then headed to Golspie where we did “The Big Burn walk”. This is a short (3 km) and easy walk but so lovely. There are different foot bridges and a waterfall.

Content: We then had a quick lunch at this lovely cafeteria in the heart of Golspie, and the food was so good.

Content: Still in Golspie, you can visit the beautiful Dunrobin Castle. The entry fee is £ 12,50 for an adult.

Content: For our fifth night we decided to stay in the small historic town of Dornoch. Our stay at the Eagle Hotel was great, lovely rooms, good food and it is located right in the city centre.

Content: On our sixth day we moved to the Black Isle. The first village that we visited was Cromarty. It was like going back in time, such a lovely village.

Content: We then went for a walk in Rosemarkie. The path is called Fairy Glen. This is another short and easy walk that leads to two wonderful waterfalls.

Content: After the walk and quick bite we went to Chanonry point to try and spot a few dolphins. We waited a bit but we did not manage to see any. Such a nice day though.

Content: We then crossed the Kessock Bridge to get to Inverness. This is where the NC500 usually ends :) Our hotel was the River Ness Hotel.
