Menorcas flygplats

Content: Hello there! Let’s start another trip… now we’ll be heading to Menorca, Spain! The sister island to Mallorca that most people look over! This will be your first stop in Menorca: The airport. Not necessarily, as you can also get to Menorca by ferry, however, in my case, I flew to the island paradiso! About the airport: it’s quite a small airport, so don’t expect to go for a shopping spree or something of the sort. When you come out, you will have two options to get to your destination: Public bus or Taxi. I was staying in Ciutadella, which is on the opposite side of the island, so taking a bus would have required a lot of time and patience! You can do it, you’ll have to catch 2 buses though. Due to this and it being a bit late, I decided to take a taxi. It took around 45 minutes to get to my destination, and it was not the most budget-friendly option (around 75€), but it was faster and more comfortable. Beware, there are no Ubers or anything of the sort in Menorca!

Location: Cala en Blanes

Day 1 - 7 Jun 2022

Vista Blanes

Content: After the taxi ride I arrived at my Hotel. It’s an apart/hotel really, so your room will have a small kitchen and dining area with all the tools you need to enjoy some home made meals. The Hotel has an amazing and huge pool, a big bar and even a small mini market where you can buy everything from a souvenir to rice. The location is also amazing! It’s not right in Ciutadella but it’s really close to it. It’s a 15 minute walk or a 5 minute bus ride. There is a bus stop right next to the hotel too. Not only is it close to the city centre and transportation options, but it is close to some of the most amazing calas ever… but we’ll get there soon! Now that you are here though, I would advise you to start thinking about renting a car. Public transportation in Menorca is quite complicated. First, forget your card. You will always have to pay with money. And be careful, bills above 10€ will not be exchanged, so you will have to pay for you ticket with either coins or less than 10€. Second, some buses are booked seat only. If you do not book a seat in advance, forget getting on the bus. Third, the timetables are a mess. There are not that many buses so get ready to wait. HOWEVER, there is a positive thing about the buses. Some calas are quite far away from the road, but the bus is the only vehicle allowed to go as close to the calas as possible, which cars are not. In case you want to rent a car, the Hotel can facilitate this with their partner car rental agency. Just go to the hotel’s reception and ask for more info.

Location: Cala en Brut

Day 2 - 8 Jun 2022

Cala en Brut

Content: Get your walking shoes, a towel and your bathing suit on, we are going to have a beach day! Let’s walk from the hotel to the first cala of the day: Cala en Brut. Omg are you going to love this place. The water is a turquoise vivid blue, and you can see the seafloor clearly! You will not find sand to lay your towel on, however, do like the locals, and just throw it on a sort of comfortable rock. To get in the water, don’t worry my not so brave friends! In case you don’t want to jump in immediately, there are stairs along this cala that will help you go in and out the water just fine. This is a must see for me.

Content: Right next to the Hotel, you will find Cala en Blanes. This is quite bigger in size compared with the last cala, and it does have sand!! You will also find a small beach side bar, where you can eat something for lunch. In case you brought your own food and would prefer to eat in a table sitting down, fear not fellow human! Right next to the bar there is this amazing palm tree park full with several sitting areas with cute little tables to eat on! Just enjoy some lunch and the rest of your day swimming away from your worries in this wonderful cala!

Location: Cala en Frares

Day 3 - 9 Jun 2022

Cala des Frares

Content: Another day another Cala! And this is, in my option, a great find! If you stay at the Hotel I recommend, you will find a nice walking path from the Hotel on the way to Ciutadella that is right next to the sea. I suggest you take this path! Your final destination will be Ciutadella, buuuut I would advise you to spend the morning here in Frares because it’s super worth it! The water is literally crystal blue, and the cala is so so quiet! It’s not one of the well known calas in Menorca, so you’re probably going to find yourself completely alone here! Enjoy an amazing swim and lay out in the sun before going to Ciutadella! *Warning - it’s a bit of a walk so think about taking the car in case you do not feel ok to walk too long*

Location: Ciutadella de Menorca

Content: Ok so I’m in love with this place! As you probably know by now (maybe you don’t) I’m a vegetarian, so you can imagine the struggle it is to find places that can actually cater to my diet. So when I found this place, I decided to give it a try. Best decision of my life! It was SO GOOD!!! The food is amazing, vegan, and they offer a lot of brunch-ish options to eat and drink! I came here more than once - that’s how much I liked this place!!

Ciutadella de Menorca

Content: Spend some time just hanging around in Ciutadella! It’s such a charming Mediterranean city, sooo worth losing yourself in these streets! Good time to purchase bus tickets too, in case you decided to travel by bus! There is a ticket booth in Plaza de los Pinos where you can book your bus seat and buy the ticket in advance. Plus, you can pay with card which is absolutely awesome!!!

Content: I would advise taking the car to come here since it is a bit out of the way. However, it is more than doable to walk (I walked). This is a paid venue! (6€ per person) Lithica is an old marble quarry that has been rehabilitated as a visiting garden and almost art venue. You will be able to walk through the humungous garden and then the quarry itself (photos). You feel sooooo small here, and it really is a fascinating place to see. Get ready to spend a few hours here if you want to see everything properly!!

Location: Cala Pregonda

Day 4 - 10 Jun 2022

Cala Pregonda

Cala Pregonda, Cala Pregonda
Cala Pregonda, Cala Pregonda

Content: One of those places it will be easier to access by car! It is almost on the opposite side of the island, so the scenery will be pretty different than what you have been used to. Before you reach the beach, get ready to hike a little bit. It’s around 40 minutes hiking from the parking lot, and you will get there! Beware there is absolutely nothing here, so you will not find a bar or a store in case you forgot something or need to buy something. Remember to take everything you need with you! The sand is a reddish brown color, almost like terracotta, so it’s a beautiful sight to behold!

Location: Balearic Islands

Day 5 - 11 Jun 2022

Cala Macarella

Balearic Islands, Cala Macarella
Balearic Islands, Cala Macarella

Content: Today you are going to walk A LOT!! Be ready! Also, it will be a full day at the beach, so take some lunch with you!!! It can get here by car or bus, however, in case you decide to go by car, be aware that you will have to walk more. The walk to reach this cala is not too hard (if you go by bus, which was my case), around 15 minutes walking. You will find bars at this beach, so in case you get hungry or need to use the bathroom, you will be able to! It’s a beautiful beach to go for a dip and just enjoy your vacation!

Content: I loooved this beautiful beach! It’s quite small, but simply wonderful! It’s around 5 minutes from Cala Macarella, so you will not take too long to get here! On the way here you will be going through the Cami de Cavalls, which would translate to path of the horses. This path goes all around the island and it was first used on the XIV century by the Spanish knights, that were ordered by the king to have an armed horse around all around the island to defend the coast from the french and the English. This path is the only one you’ll find to take you to these calas, which is why I mentioned you will have to walk a lot!!

Content: I fell in love with this place! The beach is not only sand but rock, which means the underwater fauna is quite active here! You will find a loooot of fish swimming around and even some crabs climbing the rocks! The water is literally turquoise crystal, and you’ll feel like you are in the Maldives! It’s a bit of a hike, fair enough, but in my opinion, super worth it! This beach is also deserted, in the sense that you will not be able to find any bars or stores or bathrooms here!

Content: To get here, I did take the car, so I will not be able to tell you how it is to take the bus. This is, in my opinion, the Spanish Santorini! All the houses are cute little roundish white buildings with beautiful pink flowers colouring the landscape and giving it life! It’s a small city, with a little cala for you to bathe. Super super worth it! I would say stay here as long as you need to explore all the streets Binibeca has to offer you!!!

Location: Mahón

Day 6 - 12 Jun 2022

Mahón

Mahón, Mahón

Content: Since you’re on this side of the island, why not check out the city of Mahón? I will have to be honest with you, Mahón did not captivate me as much as Ciutadella. It’s a more “common” city, like a lot of other Spanish cities you will find throughout the country. However, it is the capital of the island, so it’s always interesting to see!

Location: Cala Galdana

Day 6 - 12 Jun 2022

Cala Galdana

Cala Galdana, Cala Galdana

Content: This was my last stop before leaving on the next day, and it had to be another beach! This one is a bit more popular and quite accessible, so you’ll find a lot more people here! It’s nonetheless beautiful, and a great place to go for a late afternoon swim! After this, I went back home to drop everything off at the hotel, and went to deliver the car at the car rental office. Next day I had to leave early to catch my flight and had to pack my bags. I hate going back home! Remember, public transportation is not great, so you’ll need to get up early and catch 3 buses to get to the airport!! In case you have any doubts about the timetables of the buses, check at the reception! They can give you the timetables!! In case you visit any of these places in Menorca, let me know!! Would love to know your thoughts!! Hope you have a great vacation!!! See you soon for another itinerary!! 😁
