Content: We arrived at the newly built Airport and were picked up at the exit by a shuttle transfer that we have preciously booked via our hotel. There is still no metro connection to the city as it is just being built and the Airport is quite new.

Content: We intentionally had booked this hotel because of the very central location near the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia, as well as of the amazing rooftop terrace and gorgeous views you get from there. So after a long day of travelling we decided to head up there first and go for a delicious snack and drinks.

We went to a restaurant for drinks (be careful to only drink alcohol in licensed restaurants and never somewhere privately) and continued strolling around the streets.

Content: We went for lunch to an Indian restaurant and we couldn‘t have made a better choice! They had lots of vegan and vegetarian options so it was hard to make a choice. The place was really charming to sit, to watch people passing by, very delicious food and the staff was more than helpful and kind. We could have sat there for several hours. Even though we sat outside, also the additional floors inside were so nicely decorated, and on the top floor you have even an incredible direct view to Hagia Sofia nearby.

Content: This day started with an early visit of the Grand Bazaar which is the largest fully covered market in the World. Take a lot of time to stroll around and check out all areas of this historic place with its around 4.000 shops. Here you can find anything from lamps, carpets, jewellery, decors, clothes, shoes and so much more. The architecture and alleys are rich in history, and we felt like in a traditional shopping mall. It dates back to 1461 and you can still admire the ancient decorations and paintings on the wall. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Istanbul which is for sure the reason why it‘s very busy and crowded. We also don‘t recommend buying something there, because prices are much higher than in other markets. If you want to buy something at markets, don‘t forget to negotiate.

Content: We went further strolling through the endless streets around the Grand Bazaar and along the local and very busy and immensely crowded (but very authentic) Mahmut Pasa Camii Market. There local people go to buy their stuff and also some budget deals are definately possible. Make sure to buy some fresh fruit juice at one of the multiple little shops along the way.

Content: We went for lunch to the little imbiss Levent Börek, where we sat outside on the small terrace on their first floor. This was a much needed and nice break from the hustle and bustle down at the street and it was fun to watch people making their way along the markets.

There we bought some really delicious teas with exotic flavours.

Content: As we made our way back to the hotel we stopped by at one of the multiple little street stalls and bought a snack. Salted and roasted corn cobs are simple, cheap and really really delicious! We took a walk along the Golden horn before we hopped on the tram to go back to the hotel.

Content: This evening we had dinner on the rooftop of our hotel and took it slowly. The whole day roaming around three markets with lots of noise, people and new experiences has made us really tired and we went to bed earlier than usual. But with this gorgeous view from the rooftop terrace we didn‘t mind spending our evening here anyway :-)

Content: Early in the morning we visited the Ayasofia, which is part of UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. The mosque has a vital history and the architecture is stunning. If we would have more time we would have absolutely booked a guided tour for the Mosque. But you can also experience it on your own. Make sure to take your shoes off at the entry, women should cover head and shoulders and it is required to stay silent.

Content: The rest of the day we explored the famous districts of Fener and Balat. The former Jewish and Greek districts are full of history, old and very colourful buildings and streets, cute cafés and also a lot of ruins in between the fancy places. Countless instagrammable photospots and definately a must see when you are visiting Istanbul. Take at least half a day to explore, a whole day would be perfect in our eyes. Unfortunately it rained a lot this afternoon and so we didn‘t get to see as much as we wanted. But we came back at the end if our Instanbul trip and explored those places we haven‘t seen yet.

Balat

Fatih, Balat

Content: Our tip is to visit Balat on a Tuesday, as there will take place the weekly local market. It‘s very big and follows the main road beginning at the main square at the center of Balat. In our eyes strolling around this market was the very best way to give us a feeling of the real life in Istanbul. Very authentic, very busy and just a different Istanbul than the average tourist gets to see for sure.

Content: We made our way back to the bus and strolled around the less fancy streets of Fener and Balat. Fener and Balat have two faces that exist next to eachother. Fancy cafés, colourful streets and rich historic buildings next to poor houses and even ruins. But in our eyes this is what makes the unique charm and vibe of those districts. As the ruins belong to the authenticity as well we think it‘s good to explore those streets and corners as well.

Not only that it is gorgeous to have a 360° view over the city, the Marmara Sea, the Bosphorus and the Asian part of Istanbul, it is also a beautiful place to watch the sunset, the food is good and the staff incredibly nice and helpful. Next time we will also absolutely check this terrace out for breakfast.

Content: We headed to the French Street, which is said to be the most French street outer France. So expectations were big and we ended up feeling a bit disappointed. Not only that the Cafés theirselves are looking really artificial with lots of Neon lights and signs, the vibe has got nothing to do with France in our opinion. But tastes are different and maybe other people feel differently about it :-)

Make sure to visit it before you visit the main parts of the Palace, as it‘s stunning and beautiful and you really want to discover the exotic and royal rooms, baths and halls without crowds. The extra fee for additional 8 € are totally worth it.

It will be more crowded but the fact that you have experienced the Harem before without so many people will have paid off already for you at that time, promise! The other exhibitions as the Weapon room, the Clock room, the kitchen and so on are also very interesting to explore. There are also cafés in the park where you can take a break for a snack and a coffee. If you are interested in history then we recommend you to plan with 3-4 hours minimum, or even half a day to soak up all the historic flair.

Day 7 - 22 Oct 2021

İstiklal Caddesi

Beyoğlu, İstiklal Caddesi

Content: The rest of the afternoon consisted of strolling around the most famous shopping street of Istanbul. In many guides Istiklal Caddesi (Indipendence Avenue) is marked as must see in Istanbul. To be honest in our eyes it isn‘t a neccessairy part of an Istanbul trip, if you‘re not a shopaholic. The street reminded us of all those big shopping streets that you find in any big city with shops of well known big brands. The only thing we really enjoyed there and what is definately a must see was the nostalgic Tram Line T2. The Heritage line connects the Taksim Square with the Tünel termini and runs along the entire Istaklal Caddesi. We would‘t recommend riding the Tram as it‘s always packed with people.

Snog Roof Bar

Content: On our last evening we wanted to go up again on one of the multiple rooftop bars and enjoy a last sunset in Istanbul. We went up to Snog Rooftop bar and sat there for hours as the cocktails were incredibly delicious, the sunset and the view over Istanbul and directly over to Galata Tower was amazing and the music was exactly what you wish for on a Friday evening ;-) Besides that also the staff was really charming and made us want to stay even longer.

Content: Our last stop was at the bustling street directly under the balcony of our hotel room in the very famous and touristy Büyük Hendek Caddesi. It is directly leading to Galata Tower and is packed with cafés, shops and restaurants. The quality of food and prices might be according to the touristy vibe, but for us, as it was our last evening and we had to get up early the next morning, it was the perfect place for us for a last drink as we didn‘t have a long way back to our room ;-)
