Day 1 - 4 Jun 2022
Content: Staying in a small town and commuting to the popular towns by train/ferry is a great option to avoid crowds and cut back on costs. We stayed in a lovely town called Olcio but perhaps a bit too small as it didn’t have any supermarkets, only one restaurant, and trains were infrequent. If you have a car, not an issue as larger towns like Mandello del Lario and Varenna are just minutes away by car. If you rely on trains (as we did), it can be a real setback with infrequent train schedules that only start operating at noon. Traveling on foot is an option (around 40 mins) but can feel a bit dangerous without pedestrian lanes/curbsides on some of the roads.
Content: Walk around to explore the town and take in the gorgeous views. Stop off at Gelateria Rolly for a coffee and a gelato!
Day 1 - 4 Jun 2022
Content: Catch a train to Varenna. A lovely town but packed to the brim with tourists. Stop off at the Botanical Garden.
Day 1 - 4 Jun 2022
Content: Relax on the beach
Content: Spaghetti vongole was excellent. Pizzas looked good too.
Day 2 - 5 Jun 2022
Content: The wanderer’s path. To start in Olcio, the path isn’t clearly marked. So we followed the Olcio circular trail until we merged onto the Sentiero del Viandante
Content: The trail is split into six stages - we completed the path from Olcio to Lierna.
Day 2 - 5 Jun 2022
Content: Wander the streets of this gorgeous town. Our favorite of the towns we visited. With a huge plus of having a ferry station (with virtually no queues!) that connects to the popular towns.
Day 2 - 5 Jun 2022
Content: Take a ferry to Bellagio. Wander around and stop off for a meal or snack. Note that it’s the most expensive of the towns in the area.
Day 3 - 6 Jun 2022
