Burrard hotel

Vancouver, Burrard hotel

Content: Arriving at YVR you have a couple of options when it comes to getting to Downtown. On this occasion I used the skytrain ($9 ish) which took 25 mins. If you’re less familiar/ prefer connivence there are plenty of taxis available at around $30-40 time depending. My first stay was at the Burrard Hotel on Burrard street. An excellent downtown location.

Content: Providing you have the energy ( and this all depends on how long you’ve been flying / time difference etc ) I fully endorse a walk around the Sea Wall and Stanley Park. Here you can pick up your first ‘London Fog’ a tea latte made with Earl Grey Tea. ( yes it does taste how it sounds ) Be prepared for all weather especially in October.

Gastown

Vancouver, Gastown
Vancouver, Gastown

Content: Potentially feeling tired ( and hungry) I suggest a morning of strolling through Gastown, the oldest part of the city, beautiful in all seasons but specially Autumn. The red brick buildings perfectly compliment the orange and red leaves that scatter the wet cobble-esq pavement. You’ll also find the infamous Steam Clock, a favourite amongst tourists. Here you’ll find coffee shop galore and lots of independent shops to keep you going till lunch. Nelson The Seagull is a personal favourite of mine

Content: To continue your afternoon in Gastown I recommend the ‘Gastown Historic Walking Food Tour.’ Covering several restaurants, with an abundance of different cuisines and a whole lot of history, this tour is a lovely way to ease you into the dimming lights of dusk.

Content: For a change of view ( quite literally ) I recommend the Blue Horizon Hotel on Robson Street. Rooms have balconies which look out over the city / mountains / ocean.

Capilano Suspension Bridge

Content: Without a doubt a must do for anyone that visits the city. A short shuttle ride ( time of year depending) to North Vancouver will emerge you in a lane of trees. If you visit Capilano in December you’ll also see the park lit up with fairy lights. There are lots of different activities such as the sky walk and the infamous bridge across the canyon itself.

Content: For a full day trip into nature take on the spectacular views of the sea to sky highway ( referred to by the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the song ‘Snow’ ) With several stops along the way including Alexander Falls & Shannon Falls as well as Squamish, Canada’s adventure capital for a coffee break. In Whistler you’ll have plenty of time to see the sites, whether you prefer they on the ground in the shops and bars or up in the air in Whistlers peak to peak gondola!
