Day 1 - 1 Sep 2018
Content: Kangerlussuaq Airport has a tiny terminal that handles only flights from some destination. We took a flight from Copenhagen Airport to Kangerlussuaq Airport which was about 5 hours journey. There was a restaurant as well as a self-service bar. Kangerlussuaq is the biggest gateway to Greenland. It is comparatively a small village and the airport played a major role as a stopover site for aircraft missions.
Content: The signpost outside the airport was best known as a photographed landmark. It was set up by Scandinavian Airlines to display the direction of travel and flight times to well-known travel destinations around the world. We headed to the hotel Polar Lodge that is situated in a walk-able distance from the airport.
Content: We booked rooms at Polar Lodge through the internet. The room was clean with white walls and a fine bed. The only bad thing was for 6 six rooms in a block shared two bathrooms in the corridor. The room service was excellent, they kept everything neat and clean. They provided a kitchen to cook our food. The location was perfect we could able to buy things from the supermarket close to the hotel. We closed our day by taking dinner from Airport Cafeteria.
Content: It was very crowded to see the Northern Lights. Unfortunately, this day we could see the sky is dominated by shades of green, violet, and blue colours.
Day 2 - 2 Sep 2018
Content: After breakfast, we started our day from Polar Lodge. The breakfast was served in a buffet style, which included cereals, rolls, cheese, and butter. The fruit juices and coffee was available. The kitchen was equipped with a dishwasher as well as a communal fridge.
Content: We went to explore Greenland's Ice Cap. It is a unique place that offered a real view of natural phenomena that can only be found in this far northern part of the world. It was naturally formed sheets with the accumulation of layers of compacted snow and ice, gasses, dust, and water. We felt most of the places as slippery. The hiking on the ice, crampons, and walking poles was an awesome experience. Point 660 was another popular spot we visited at the end of the road to the Ice Cap. It indicates the altitude above sea level. From there we could saw the rough surface of the ice and the view was very fascinating to our eyes. We got a well-knowledgeable guide from the Lodge. He was very friendly as well as polite throughout the trip.
Content: Our guide advised us to experience the beauty of Greenland from a flight. We booked Air Zafari through the internet. The Zafari offers a wide choice of tourist flights and the staff was very flexible. They helped us to found the best trip to explore the place. The flight started at Kangerlussuaq Airport. The pilot explained the planned route, flight conditions, and the possibilities to see Reindeers or herds of musk ox. He asked us to put on the headsets through which he communicated about the safety instructions and places. We saw a great view of Greenland from one of the very best angles immediately after takeoff. We got an opportunity to saw Icecap and Arctic wildlife from above. The trip provided a chance to observe the icebergs from the sky. We flew over Paradise Valley to return Kangerlussuaq Airport.
Content: Our next destination was the Kangerlussuaq Museum which is located at the heart of the airport area. From the museum, we could learn about the history of the place. The town of Kangerlussuaq was founded as an American airbase but the area around the town has been used as hunting grounds. We learned many unique features about the place. We saw many pictures and artefacts.
Content: We are lucky to watch Northern Lights from Kangerlussuaq. Northern lights are also referred to as the Aurora Borealis, it was a natural flash across the sky all year, but it is most visible from the end of September to the middle of April. This day we got a much better view of northern lights from the hotel.
Day 3 - 3 Sep 2018
Content: After breakfast, we checked out from the Polar Lodge. We took a direct flight from Kangerlussuaq to Ilulissat. Ilulissat is a fully-functional town with cafes, restaurants, and established tourist infrastructure. It is the most visited tourist destination in Greenland. It is located on the west coast of Greenland.
Content: We checked into the Hotel Arctic which is very famous in Ilulissat city. It is the 4-star property that offered fantastic views over Ilulissat town. The room was well furnished and maintained one. They have two tour companies with booking desks inside the hotel lobby. The staff was very polite and friendly. They are very knowledgeable about the place.
Content: After lunch, we set the reaming day for the city walk. We got a guide from the hotel who knows the city well. It was better to go to the city walk with an experienced guide to learn about the daily life of the North Arctic Circle. We started our walk from the World of Greenland office which is located at the crossroad.
Content: The guide showed the Ilulissat Art Museum that is a very beautiful red building. It is also known as Knud Rasmussen Museum. It is famous for changing exhibitions. On the way, he showed many spots including the Church of Zion, Knud Rasmussen Museum, The Harbour, etc. We met an artisan in a local handicraft shop. The Greenlandic handicraft is very unique. The place was surrounded by colorful houses and shops.
Content: We walked downhill and arrived at the old harbor of Ilulissat. We sat near the ocean to enjoy the rich resources from the sea. It is the busiest place in the city where many boats and ships come and go every day. We saw many tourists in and around the harbour. We saw some fish processing companies like Royal Greenland. We passed through the Whale cheekbone gate to arrive at Braettet. It was a small fish market.
Content: We went to try some local beers at the cafe. We saw 11 different types of classic and speciality beers. We had food and drinks from the cafe. We had a burger with fries which was good. The brewery occupies the same building as the Iluliaq Cafe. In the brewery, the shelves are occupied with beakers and measuring appliances give the room a pharmaceutical feel. We return to the hotel for overnight stay.
Day 4 - 4 Sep 2018
Content: This day was a big and most significant one. We took a day trip to see Eqi Glacier. After breakfast from the hotel, we departed for the one-day boat trip to Eqi. We moved towards the north of Ilulissat on the west coast of Greenland. The world-famous ice fjord is Eqi Glacier that is the most active glaciers in all of Greenland. We saw huge chunks of floating icebergs, some of them are ten times bigger than our small cozy boat. The boat trip was fabulous. We took about 3 to 4 hours to reach Eqi Glacier. We spend some time listening to the crack of the ice and trying to figure out which bit may fall off next. The trip was fun filled. We got plenty of time to enjoy and for pictures. We enjoyed our packed lunch in ice-filled surroundings. We had a frightful experience when our boat stopped in front of a huge ice wall from that cracking sound exposed that resembles an explosion. We got some time in front of the glacier to enjoy the view and take some pictures before heading back to town.
Content: We had dinner from Restaurant Icefiord. We delicious food, they presented nicely. The staff was very polite and friendly. The snow crab and Greenlandic shrimps were excellent in taste.
Day 5 - 5 Sep 2018
Content: We checked out the hotel and headed towards airport. We took a flight from Ilulissat to Nuuk. It took about 3 hour’s journey to reach Nuuk Airport. Nuuk is the capital of Greenland. It is surrounded by both modern and traditional lives. It is the home to many historical sights. We hire a taxi from the airport to the hotel.
Content: On the way to the hotel, we stopped at Mary's Kitchen for lunch. The ambience was good and calm. We had sizzler plate with rice and shrimp in sauce. The taste was good and the food was perfectly cooked.
Content: We checked into the hotel which was booked in advance. Seamen's Home is located in a comfortable area surrounded by beautiful landscapes. It is a 3-star property with large rooms. It is located by the harbor with views of the seas and mountains. We could enjoy peaceful surroundings.
Content: We went for a short walk through the streets. It was the best part of the journey to Nuuk. We visited the Nuuk Art Museum. It houses evidence of Greenlandic art and crafts. It was the perfect spot to learn about primitive art cultures. The museum complex consists of two sections one equipped with its paintings and another section with an exhibition room. The large exhibition room is occupied with temporary exhibitions from Greenlandic artists as well as artists from around the world.
Content: We had dinner from Bone's Nuuk. The food was excellent and delicious. We ordered ribs it was a very famous in the restaurant. It was very delicious and tender.
Day 6 - 6 Sep 2018
Content: After breakfast, we headed to the Greenland National Museum. It is the first museum of Greenland which provided a depth look into the cultural history. We saw many unique collections preserved in the museum. We took about 3 hours to cover the entire museum. Then we headed to Iceberg Cruise.
Content: We took a 2 hours Iceberg Crusie trip. It was an amazing trip through the Iceberg. Greenland's icebergs are from glaciers. The icebergs break off as the glaciers melt and float down through fjords into the ocean. We enjoyed the entire journey.
Content: It was a very trilled experience. We could see many creatures on the way. But due to the time limit, we could spot only one whale. We took a private boat to Disko Bay. They dropped us back to the shore.
Content: We stopped here for a break. Katuaq is the cultural hub of Greenland. There was a small exhibition of local paintings. It is a popular spot for artists all over the world. The architecture was very unique, it is the L-shaped building.
Content: We had dinner from the hotel. The food was delicious. This was our last day in Greenland. Greenland is the ultimate destination for all types of travellers, to explore adventurers to history. It was an expensive trip but worth for money.
Day 7 - 7 Sep 2018
Content: We checked out from the hotel and headed to airport. We took flight to home town from Nuuk Airport.
