Content: Antigua is the ideal start for a trip through Guatemala. It is easily accessible from the international airport in Guatemala City. With an Uber you are there in 1 hour. Because of the colored houses, narrow alleys, beautiful churches and parks it feels very nice and together with the various sights you can certainly find entertainment for 3 days.

Day 2 - 5 Feb 2022
Content: Leaving Antigua without visiting Santa Cathalina Arch is not really possible. You will find this famous structure right in the center of Antigua. Make sure to get there as early as possible in the morning so that there are no hordes of tourists and you can take the perfect photo!

Content: Located next to the Santa Cathalina Arch you will find Nim Po't. This indoor market is full of authentic handmade products and is actually more of a large store. Would you like to buy something? Don't forget to negotiate the price. Another nice market is Mercado de Artesanías. This is considered the most touristic market of Antigua. Nevertheless, it is certainly nice to stroll around here and look for beautiful souvenirs. If you want to visit a more local market where you can buy a lot of fruit and vegetables, it is best to go to Antigua Market .This market takes place on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with Saturday morning being the busiest and most fun time.
Day 3 - 6 Feb 2022
Content: Located on a hill, within walking distance of Antigua is Cerro de la Cruz. A short walk of about 15 minutes brings you on top of the mountain from where you have a beautiful view over the city of Antigua. Well worth a visit! Since it can get very hot, it is wise to visit Cerro de la Cruz in the morning.
Content: Located next to the square 'Parque Central' is the Cathedral of Santiago, which collapsed in 1773 as a result of a severe earthquake. The church has never been restored. From the outside it looks like an 'ordinary' church, but inside it is completely dilapidated! A special place in Antigua. Buy a ticket for a few euros on the side of the church (if you're at the front, it's on the right) and be amazed by this beautiful ruin. You cannot enjoy yourself here all day, but it is definitely worth it for about 30 minutes.
Day 4 - 7 Feb 2022
Content: An absolute highlight of Guatemala, and maybe even all of Central America, is climbing the Volcán de Acatenango. Spend the night in the 'base camp' at a height of 3750 meters and watch the volcano Fuégo erupt every 20 minutes. The total distance is 15.5 kilometers and the climb up takes about 5 to 6 hours (depending on your condition). Hardly anywhere else in the world can you climb that high without professional equipment!
Day 5 - 8 Feb 2022
Content: After a fantastic night camping with a view of the active Fuego volcano you will start the walk back down today. This takes a lot shorter than the outward journey, in about 3 hours you are back at the car with which you go back to Antigua.
Content: Once back in Antigua it is nice to sleep in a good hotel. This way you can take a nice shower and recover from the amazing Acatenango hike!
Day 6 - 9 Feb 2022
Content: From Antigua you travel to Panajachel in about 4 hours. You can often arrange a shuttle bus to this place through your hotel. You will spend the night here so that you can take the boat the next day to another town located on Lake Atitlan.
Day 7 - 10 Feb 2022
Content: You can move easily and cheaply between the villages with the boats. Every village attracts its own kind of people, which makes it a lot of fun to do a kind of island-hopping from village to village. It is a very relaxed place and many travelers stay here longer than planned. You can enjoy yourself here for at least 3 to 4 days. San Pedro, also known as the backpacker's village, is a very good place to stay at Lake Atitlan. There is a relaxed atmosphere and you can easily visit all the highlights from here.
Day 8 - 11 Feb 2022
Content: join the Indian Nose Sunrise tour for the best view of Lake Atitlan! You will be picked up by car and it is about an hour's walk to the top.

Content: San Marcos is the hippie village of Lake Atitlan. For only 10 Quetzal, you can take the boat from San Pedro to this village. There is a relaxed atmosphere, backpackers who have never left sell jewelry, you walk through narrow streets and there are many vegan and healthy restaurants. Definitely fun to walk through!
Content: The Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve is located next to San Marcos and is well worth a visit! This beautiful nature reserve is nestled into the rocks along Lake Atitlan. You can relax here or take a nice walk to the viewpoint on top of the mountain. It is one of the best places to swim in Lake Atitlan as the water is clean here. There is also a platform of about 8 meters high where you can jump into the water. So don't forget to bring your swimming gear. The entrance to Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve is about GTQ15.
Day 9 - 12 Feb 2022
Content: Coffee is one of Guatemala's most important exports. It is therefore nice to visit a Finca (coffee plantation). Near the village of San Juan is a coffee plantation where you can take a tour. It is about a 20-minute tuk-tuk ride over bumpy roads from San Pedro. Once you have arrived at the coffee plantation, you will be warmly welcomed. Unfortunately, the guide cannot speak English, but in Spanish it does have its charms. Among other things, he takes you to the real plantation where you can see the coffee plants growing. You will also get a tour of the small factory and of course you will end the tour with a delicious cup of coffee. You can probably book a tour through the coffee plantation at your hotel or at one of the tourist offices around Lago de Atitlan. A tour costs about €17 per person.
Day 10 - 13 Feb 2022
Content: Visit the huge traditional market in Chichicastenango. This market takes place every Thursday and Sunday. From Panajachel can take a tour to the market. Do not forget to negotiate the price on the market. It is a very touristic attraction and they will raise the price considerably if they see a tourist.
Day 11 - 14 Feb 2022
Content: Today you will take a shuttle bus from your hotel to Semuc Champey. Prepare yourself for a long burrito of about 11 hours through the beautiful surroundings of Guatemala.
Content: In the evening you arrive at your hotel. It is beautifully situated 5 minutes walking distance from the entrance to the Nationala Park. An ideal place to stay! At the restaurant you can order something to eat with a view of the river.
Day 12 - 15 Feb 2022
Content: Chemuc Champey is a nature reserve known for its naturally formed limestone bridge on which turquoise colored water pools have formed. It is beautifully situated between steep mountain walls overgrown with trees. Via a walk of about an hour you arrive at a beautiful view point. From here you look out on the turquoise colored water pools. It is a lot of stairs to reach the viewpoint but it is so worth it!
Day 13 - 16 Feb 2022
Content: In the morning it is time to travel further. You can book the shuttle bus to Flores through the hotel. This ride takes about 11 hours and is really beautiful!
Content: In the evening you arrive at your hotel. Zapotee Tree Inn is located on the other side of the island of Flores giving you a beautiful view! The owners are very friendly and they serve super tasty food.
Day 14 - 17 Feb 2022
Content: Flores is located on a beautiful lake. Take a boat trip early in the afternoon and see many birds. You will also sail to an island where large iguanas live. Very nice to see! The owner of the hotel offers this tour and knows a lot about the area and Guatemala.
Day 15 - 18 Feb 2022
Content: One of the biggest reasons to go to Flores for many travelers is a visit to Tikal. In the middle of the jungle you will find the impressive ancient Mayan temples. Some you can even climb for a panoramic view of the Maya city. Many tours are offered from Flores to this special place and the travel time is about an hour.
Day 16 - 19 Feb 2022
Content: In Rio Dulce you can relax from your hammock and cool off in the river while bobbing. The setting is beautiful: dense jungle with an adjacent river. Besides lazing in your hammock with a good book, there are a number of activities to do. From Flores you travel to Rio Dulce in about 4 hours. You can easily buy a ticket for the shuttle bus at the hotel Zapotee Tree Inn.
Day 16 - 19 Feb 2022
Content: El Hotelito Perdido is perhaps the most beautiful hotel where we stayed in Guatemala. It is located on the beautiful river in the jungle and the atmosphere in the hotel is very relaxed. From the hotel you can kayak and swim. Every evening there is a joint vegetarian meal (the food is really delicious).
Day 17 - 20 Feb 2022
Content: Look for the Manatee on a tour! They are very shy animals so difficult to spot but definitely worth a try! When you book a tour through your hotel, you go early in the morning by kayak to a tributary of the river. This area is protected so that the manatees can live in peace. The kayak trip is breathtakingly beautiful.

Content: Time to relax! Swim in the river, relax in one of the hammocks or rent a Kayak and explore the surroundings.
Day 19 - 22 Feb 2022
Content: From Hotelito Perdido it is an hour's boat ride to Rio Dulce where your bus to Guatemala City departs. You can buy a bus ticket and a ticket for the boat at your hotel. It is again a long drive of about 7 hours.
