Day 1 - 8 Nov 2021
Content: There are multiple options when visiting Grutas Tolantongo: - If you are short on time you can pay for a day trip from Mexico City. - If you have more time I recommend staying in a place close by in order to be able to get there earlier and spend more time there. - Ixmiquilpan is a great option, especially if you don’t have a car. You can get a bus here from Mexico City. Each day there are buses to and from Grutas Tolantongo starting from Ixmiquilpan. The earliest bus to go is at 9.30am and the last one back is 5.30pm. If you are on a budget and backpacking like us there are many cheap accommodations here. - Alternatively you could spend the night at one of the hotels in Grutas Tolantongo. You can’t book most of these, most you have to turn up and it is first come first served. - Make sure to visit not only the iconic hot spring pools but also the stunning river and caves. - To visit the caves make sure you have change to rent a locker as you are not allowed to take anything other than swimwear up to them. The lockers cost 70 pesos plus an 80 pesos deposit that you get back once you return the key. - Don’t take any food with you as your bags get searched before entering the thermal pools and any food is confiscated. - if you are feeling adventurous you can also do zip lining here over the stunning scenery. - There are plenty of restaurants and shops here that are reasonably priced.
