Day 1 - 5 Apr 2022
Content: Welcome to Panama! I crossed the border from Costa Rica and took two local buses and a water taxi to Bocas del Toro. Trip details: Bus the border to Changuinola $1 Bus Changuinola to Almirante $1.45 Water taxi Almirante to Bocas $5
Day 2 - 6 Apr 2022
Content: Take a bus or taxi to Playa Bluff. The beach has a restaurant and a valleyball net. You can borrow a ball from the restaurant.
Day 3 - 7 Apr 2022
Content: Take a water taxi to Bastimentos island. It costs $5. Bastimentos is less touristy, there are no cars, it's very chill and calm and it's really beautiful. Walk around the "town" and explore the area.
Day 3 - 7 Apr 2022
Content: Have dinner at the restaurant Alvin/Kecha by the sea. Vegetarian plate costs $5. Friendly service and a beautiful place.
Day 3 - 7 Apr 2022
Content: Stay at hotel Caribbean view. Owned by a lovely local family. It's a beautiful place by the sea and kitchen is available for use when the restaurant is not running.
Day 4 - 8 Apr 2022
Content: Take a walk across the island to the Wizard beach. The walk is around 30min and I'd recommend going barefoot as the path can be very muddy.
Content: From the end of the Wizard beach take the path in the forest to the Red Frog beach. As the name says you can see tiny red frogs on the way. The walk takes around another 30min to reach the next beach. When you make it to the Red Frog beach, walk all the way to the end of the beach. There's a wooden platform that takes you to a viewpoint.
Day 5 - 9 Apr 2022
Content: Farm tour Ask for Luis at the Caribbean view hotel if he can take you to his farm. At the farm he shows you all kinds of tropical fruit that you can taste and gets you a fresh coconut to drink.
Day 6 - 10 Apr 2022
Content: Take a boat back to Isla Colon $5 and another boat to the mainland $5. Walk to the bus terminal and take a bus to the direction of David. Tell the driver to stop in front of the Roots Hostel in Hornito. The hostel might seem as it's in the middle of nowhere but trust me it's a hidden gem. The owner is super friendly, made us free cocktails the first night and surely tells you all the spots to go to around the place.
Content: Have lunch or dinner at a local restaurant in "town". The food is super affordable, about $2 a plate. Order patacones (fried plantains in the picture) they're really delicious!
Day 7 - 11 Apr 2022
Content: Today is a perfect day to go chase some waterfalls! There's a waterfall hike close to the hostel where you can see 4 waterfalls along the river. Take a bus to a refugee camp. Walk past it down the road until there's a horse ranch on the left side of the road. On the ride side of the road you can find a gate. Go through the gate and follow yellow or orange marks. The first waterfall is the tallest one, a beautiful place to have a swim too. Most of the time you can be the only person at the waterfall. At the second one you can also have a swim and on the edge you can look down for the other waterfall you just visited. The third waterfall is popular among local families so it can get crowded easily. The last waterfall is beautiful but doesn't have a big pool for swimming. My personal favorites were to two first ones.
Day 8 - 12 Apr 2022
Content: To get to Boquete from the Roots Hostel take a bus first to David and then at the bus station in David take another bus to Boquete.
Day 9 - 13 Apr 2022
Content: One of the best hikes you can do in Boquete is to hike the Volcano Barú for sunrise. Book a shuttle at the Balasina beer hostel for $5 The shuttle will pick you up at midnight, the drive to the beginning of the hiking trail takes around 20min. The hike up takes around 5 hours. Take breaks, you don't want to be too fast and make it too early to the top as it's getting colder the higher you get. The best is to make it to the top around 6am. So remember to take breaks. If you're lucky with the weather the views are you at the top. This hike has definitely been one of the highlights of my trip so far. In total the hike is 16km up, 16 down so 32km in total. Enjoy!
Day 10 - 14 Apr 2022
Content: Schedule a rest day for the day after the hike. You're gonna want to take the next day slowly because most likely you're going to feel your knees.
Day 11 - 15 Apr 2022
Content: Travel Day! Take a bus to David and a bus from David to Cerro Punta. Ask The driver to stop on the way, there's a sign on the street saying Soursop hostel 1km. Get off at the bus stop and walk 15 min to the hostel. The hostel has a very remote location but that's what makes it unique. The hostel is run by a family so you will see kids running around. They also have another property near by where is a yoga platform and guests are free to use it. They also have chicken and you can get free eggs when they have leftovers. Such a nice place!
Day 12 - 16 Apr 2022
Content: Do a day trip to Macho de Monte. It's such a hidden gem that not many tourists go to. Take a bus from the main road in the direction of Cerro Punta. Jump off the bus at Cuesta de Piedra and walk along the street in the direction of Macho de Monte. The walk is around 20min. Walk until you see a sign on the road and then take the path down to the canyon. During the dry season you can walk down in the canyon but during the rain season it can be very dangerous. Still a beautiful spot to visit though.
Day 13 - 17 Apr 2022
Content: Adiós Panamá! Take a bus to Conception and change to another bus that goes to the border. From the hostel it takes around an hour to get to the border. I'd recommend going as early as possible. The border opens around 7am so to avoid traffic, be there at 7am and you can do the border crossing very quickly. I had such an amazing time in Panama exploring all these hidden gems. Hope you find inspiration from this trip and have a great time in Panama.
