Content: We usually loved to adventure in the less explored places, however we had a BLAST in the Bahamas! We took an easy flight from Miami to Nassau, taking a taxi to our Atlantis resort. We had been waiting a good year for this Caribbean country to open up post pandemic, and all we needed at the time was a negative test taken within 72 hours. After checking in, we checked out the casino quickly for a few games at the blackjack table before dinner.

Content: Only a few steps away is one of the best restaurants in the area—Nobu. We tried 6 different things to try and share, and we loved the miso bass and mini fish tacos the best! Great first short evening. Note: you definitely need at reservation in advance at this restaurant.

Olives

Content: We started off a first relaxing morning at Olives restaurant—get the sweet potato hash! We sat right by the large windows overlooking the marina, watching large super yachts enter and exit the area. Did you know that you can Google the yacht’s name to see who owns it?

Crystal Court Shops

Content: Another great thing about this resort are the Crystal shops—somewhere to buy a coverup, makeup, or browse while it’s raining outside (it is the Caribbean).

Content: We loved walking around Marina Village both day and night! The colorful buildings made us feel like we’re officially on vacation. We reserved dinner here on several Nights, ate ice cream, and bought some souvenirs. More yacht watching from close up too.

Content: A little more about the resort—we decided to stay at the Royal tower rooms because they were newly renovated, included the Aquarium/main pools/water park/casino, and was centrally located to all the fun! The decor itself is stunning and we enjoyed taking the time to notice every detail.

Location: Nassau

Day 3 - 29 Mar 2021

Fort Fincastle

Nassau, Fort Fincastle

Content: We started the day early and hired a guide/driver to take us around the island! Bahamas is known for being highly saturated in the rousing industry, but we wanted to dive into the history and culture as well to get to know the country better. Fort Fincastle is shaped like a ship upon a hill and overlooks the sea. Other enemy ships would see the structure from far away and think it’s a ship itself, which would help deter any attacks.

Queen's Staircase

Nassau, Queen's Staircase

Content: This 66 step staircase is one that the former slaves named for the Queen who had liberated them. Made of limestone, this passage was also a good escape route in case the fortress mentioned above was attacked to go to the sea. Note: tripods and professional cameras are supposedly not allowed, but we still were able to snap a few pics before we were informed of such.

John Watling's Distillery

Content: Next up, a rum distillery with a couple small tastings! It’s not just the distillery that is interesting, but also the estate that was built in the late 1700’s that serves as a museum as well. At the front gate, a small scene was filled in one of the James Bond movies with Daniel Craig 😊

Tasty Teas Bahamas

Content: Our guide insisted we visited this family owned tea shop, and we would definitely go here again if we could. The variety of tea products and their specific beneficial properties are explained by the family, and honestly one of the flavors I brought back to my mother at home cleared my mother’s migraines and lowered her blood pressure when nothing else could. They also have other spices and pepper sauces to bring back with you!

Content: Curly’s! You have to. You must do it. Guy Fieri featured this restaurant on his show, and everyone will tell you this is the best place to go. Conch soup, conch fritters, fresh fish fry with Mac n cheese pie, plantains, and potato salad—this is a comfort food extravaganza. We prefer the Sands local beer, and just a 5 minute walk away is a daiquiri shack with Sky Juice—something heavenly and boozy that will be stronger, tastier, and cheaper than what any resort will serve you! Our guide was entertaining and informative all day, we decided to treat him and welcome him to lunch with us.

The Caves

Nassau, The Caves
Nassau, The Caves

Content: The indigenous people called Lucayans used to live in these caves for shelter and hunting wild pigs.unfortunately after the Spaniards and Colombus arrived and captured 40,000 people, there were barely any left on the island. Today these caves are free to visit but a little dirty in our opinion with bottles, trash, fruit bags, and so many rats running everywhere.

Thunderball Grotto

Content: Another James Bond filming location! The captain of our boat picked us up at the airport, and we quickly boated away to this site. Can really only go during low tide, as you have a small opening between the rocks you need to get through to get into the cave inside. Great for people of any age and suggest a life jacket if you’re not comfortable with snorkeling. The water was super clear filled with fish swimming all over. We loved using the lighting from the cave as water photo ops.

Content: The famous pig beach! Yes the pigs can swim, but unfortunately due to the popularity of this location, many expect food. We refrained from giving them anything because they can also get pushy if they see anything. We only spent about 30 minutes here because of our packed day, but the small piglets were our favorite to spend time with!

Content: This place is called Iguana Island in the Exumas! A remote place with tons of iguanas looking again for food or something shiny that’s dangling from your bags. Not much else to do other than enjoy the water and take a selfie with a scaled friend!

Location: Exumas

Exuma

Exumas, Exuma

Content: Amazing place for when the tides are low! The most beautiful water yet we’ve seen in the Bahamas, and a boat captain will know where this lagoon is located in the Exumas. We took the drone out for capturing the beauty.

Compass Cay

Content: Another great stop if you’re brave enough to swim with the nurse sharks! Really, they are giant puppy dogs and are fed chum and bait every 10 minutes or so. It was fairly crowded so we didn’t stay long, but we honestly preferred swimming with them naturally in the ocean back in Belize rather then in a semi-contained area here.

Staniel Cay

Exumas, Staniel Cay

Content: We opted out of lunch with everyone else and decided to do a quick private stop to a sunken drug plane back from Pablo Escobar. This plane has been here since the 80’s, and the cargo was too heavy for it to fully take off. Now you can snorkel around it and see all the beautiful coral and sea life that thrive under the wings, in the cockpit, etc. all around it!

Day 6 - 1 Apr 2021

Lynden Pindling International Airport

Nassau, Lynden Pindling International Airport

Content: It was unfortunately time to leave, but another perk of Atlantis was that they had a rapid testing site for people going back to the US, and the results were quick. We enjoyed the resort for sure, but also all the art, culture, food, and people we met outside of the walls too. There are so many other unexplored islands that have a lot to offer, and we hope one day we can return to them!
