John F. Kennedy International Airport

Queens County, John F. Kennedy International Airport

Content: To start your New York adventure, it's best to fly into JKF airport! You will find the cheapest flights in and out of here and it also has the best transport connections. Once you land and you've collected your luggage, just jump on the Air Train back to the subway and then the subway can get you pretty much anywhere in the city. If you are there for 7 days or under, I'd recommend getting the 7 Day Subway Card as this gives you unlimited trips and will likely save you money in the long run!

Location: Kings County

Day 1 - 11 Feb 2022

Brooklyn

Kings County, Brooklyn

Content: When visiting New York, I think the best place to stay is Brookyln! Brooklyn is such a cool district of New York (think vintage clothes shops, independent cafes and amazing little eateries) but because it is across the bridge, it is one that you may not explore so fully if you are not staying there. There are tons of different AirB&B options and this is what I ended up going for as I love having my own little kitchen.

Hungry Ghost Coffee

Kings County, Hungry Ghost Coffee

Content: Start your New York adventure in Brooklyn! This gorgeous district definitely deserves at least half a day (if not a full day!) of exploring. Begin with an excellent coffee at Hungry Ghost Coffee- though if you are visiting in winter then be aware that the cafe is very small and most of the seating is outdoors!

Dumbo

Content: I have found one of the best ways to explore New York was on foot! Next, walk around 20 minutes to the infamous Dumbo District of Brooklyn and head to Washington Street for a gorgeous photo spot. On a clear day you can even see the Empire State Building in the distance!

Front General Store

Kings County, Front General Store

Content: Carry on exploring all the different little vintage shops around Brooklyn. A favourite of mine was Front General Store, which sold a gorgeous array of vintage clothes, books and jewellery.

Los Tacos

Kings County, Los Tacos

Content: Next, head for some well deserved lunch! There are many different lunch spots in Brooklyn, but I would advise Los Tacos for some tasty and really affordable tacos! Go for the Pastor- you don't regret it!

9/11 Tribute Museum

New York, 9/11 Tribute Museum

Content: Once you have reached Manhattan, I would advise a trip to the 9/11 Museums. There are a few different memorial sites in New York- there is the Tribute Museum which I visited and found very moving. Entry is $17 and there are discount options available for students.

9/11 Memorial Pools

New York, 9/11 Memorial Pools

Content: There is also the Memorial Site where the Twin Towers were located, which is free to visit. Just next to the memorial site is the official 9/11 Museum which is the most visited. Entrance is $20 and it is best to book in advance online.

Day 1 - 11 Feb 2022

Staten Island Ferry

Richmond County, Staten Island Ferry
Richmond County, Staten Island Ferry

Content: One of my absolute favourite activities I did whilst in New York was a trip on the FREE ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island! This is an amazing hack to be able to see the Statue of Liberty, as the ferry goes directly past her! We timed it so that we were sailing past at sunset which was the most amazing experience. Once you arrive into Staten Island, make sure you get off the ferry and admire the view of the skyline from a distance in that post sunset glow! There are also outlet stores directly where the ferry comes in, so you can easily spend an hour or so browing them for some deals before hopping back on the ferry to Manhattan!

Day 1 - 11 Feb 2022

Dellarocco's Brick Oven Pizza

Kings County, Dellarocco's Brick Oven Pizza

Content: It is definitely dinner time! Finish your first day in New York back in Brooklyn, with one of the best pizzas I've ever had. Head to Dellarocco's for a lovely cosy atmosphere and very reasonable prices for how brilliant the pizza is!

Content: After that, head to Top of the Rock for skyline views across the city! Top of the Rock is located at the Rockefeller Centre- once again, this is easily accessed by public transport. Another popular option is the Empire State Building but I think it is better to go up the Rockerfeller Centre as then you get a view of the Empire State Building! Entry starts at one $38, but is more expensive if you choose to go closer to sunset.

Location: Kings County

Day 2 - 12 Feb 2022

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Downtown Brooklyn

New York, American Museum of Natural History

Content: A trip to New York wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Natural History Museum! Due to COVID, it is now best to book your tickets online in advance and make sure you arrive for your time slot. There was still a queue when we got there, so I would recommend arriving a little early. There is a lot to get through so I would recommend arriving for when the museum opens or shortly after to make the most of your trip!

Gray's Papaya

New York, Gray's Papaya

Content: You will have built up an appetite while wandering around the museum, so next stop should be lunch! Head to the infamous Grays Papaya for a New York hot dog! This food spot is very famous in the city so expect to see a bit of a crowd waiting outside (especially if you go at lunch time!). This is also a great food option if you are on a budget- a hot dog and drink was very affordable.

Central Park

New York, Central Park
New York, Central Park
New York, Central Park

Content: Next up, head to arguably one of the most famous parks in the world- Central Park! Either get a ride on one of the many horse and carriages milling around the park, or if you are on a budget simply take a wander or hire a bike. Though don't underestimate how big Central Park is! Make sure you leave yourself enough time to explore fully.

Central Park

New York, Central Park

Content: While in Central Park, a really fun activity to do is ice skating! There is a ice rink set up between 106th and 108th street (to find it, make sure you enter the park at 110th and Lenox Avenue!) from November through to March. There is skates hire available and it was such an amazing experience to be ice skating with the famous skyline view in the background. This was also the ice rink featured in Home Alone 2!

Times Square

New York, Times Square
New York, Times Square
New York, Times Square

Content: Your last activity of the day should be Times Square! Jump on the subway and get off just a few minutes walk away from the famous New York spot. Times Square is definitely best viewed at night, when it really comes to life!

7th Street Burger

New York, 7th Street Burger

Content: Finish your evening with a trip to 7th Street Burger for dinner for a truly exceptional burger. They don't have any indoor seating so grab it to go, or if you are lucky you can get a seat in their heated outdoor area!

Location: New York

Day 4 - 14 Feb 2022

Ground Central Coffee Company

New York, Ground Central Coffee Company

Content: As always, start your morning with coffee. This time I would recommend heading to Ground Central close to Central Park for a delicious coffee! I also really loved the ambiance here, and you will be perfectly situated for your next morning activity.

Levain Bakery - Upper East Side

New York, Levain Bakery - Upper East Side
New York, Levain Bakery - Upper East Side

Content: A trip to New York is not complete without some really amazing food! One of the best snacks I had was a cookie from Levain Bakery- it was actually huge and warmed up so the chocolate melted. Head to one of the stores and grab one to take away, then walk to the nearby Central Park and take another wander around while you enjoy your cookie. What could be better?

Grand Central Terminal

New York, Grand Central Terminal

Content: Next, jump back on the subway and head to Grand Central Station. This station has featured on many Hollywood films and is definitely a must see! Admire the gorgeous ceiling and architecture, and especially look out for the clock on the Main Concourse which has been valued at over $20 million dollars! If you are feeling peckish again, just downstairs there is a market featuring lots of different food stalls. I grabbed a slice of Pizza!

TKTS Times Square

New York, TKTS Times Square

Content: Next up, head back to Times Square. Spend some time admiring it in the day, and then head to TKTS! TKTS sells discounted (sometimes up to 50% off!) broadway tickets for that same day. As it depends on what shows haven't been told out, you can't know in advance what tickets will be on sale. People usually go down to the booths about an hour before they open and queue up for first pick. TKTS is open every day though the timings vary- the day I was there, it opened at 3pm so I arrived about 2pm and was one of the first in the queue. I managed to get cheap tickets for Chicago!

Broadway

New York, Broadway

Content: That evening, head to Broadway! This is an absolute must do while in New York and is such an amazing experience! If you are already in Times Square, you can walk to the majority of the Broadway shows but if you are further away, you can easily get there via subway! This was one of my favourite activities of the entire trip. New York is such an amazing place and is definitely one of my favourite places I've ever visited!
