Content: We stumbled upon this hidden black sand beach while our drive on Kalpana. The beach was beautiful and sands were very black. Also this is a nude beach so if this is something you are looking for the. this might be a good option.
Day 2 - 17 Feb 2022
Content: On our drive we like this spot so we took a click on this spot
Content: This is at the end of the scenic road. You cannot swim here as this is not a beach rather you will see stones next to water.
Content: We stopped here for our lunch before heading to Mauna Kea. Food was alright though.
Day 2 - 17 Feb 2022
Content: This is a click we took on the way to Mauna Kea visitor center.
Day 2 - 17 Feb 2022
Content: For drive to Mauna Kea summit you need to have a 4 wheel drive. We rented a keep for one day so we can drive to the summit. This was our first time driving a 4WD but we managed to. Drive from visitor center to summit is about 30 mins and you also need to spend at least 30 mins at the visitor center so that you get accustomed to the altitude. Rangers are every helpful so they will also guide you how to drive. We reached at the visitor center at around 5 pm and were at the summit at around 6. Sunset was around 6:30. Also it is very cold at the Mauna Lea both at the visitor center and at the summit. So you need to be properly dressed with jacket, gloves and beanie. The view from the summit is the best highlight of our entire Hawaii trip. It is so beautiful that you don’t want to come back. After getting down the summit you can also stay at the visitor center for star glazing. We didn’t get chance to do it as it was very cloudy.
Day 3 - 18 Feb 2022
Content: On our third day we started with Waipo lookout. It was quiet a drive from Hilo. It was a good view. We wanted to drive down as well but for some reason they closed the road leading to Waipio. Also you will need 4WD to drive to Waipio.
Day 3 - 18 Feb 2022
Content: After Waipio lookout we drove to Pololu trail. It is a short but steep hike of 0.6 miles taking about 20-25 mins each way leading to a black sand beach. It was a gorgeous walk with stunning views. We really enjoyed our time here.
Day 3 - 18 Feb 2022
Content: This was just a video that we took of our drive on the way.
Day 3 - 18 Feb 2022
Content: We reached Hawaii national park in the evening. We first went to Lava tube. This is one of many such tubes on the island, which was actually created by a river of molten lava. When a lava tube is active, lava travels along its floor at temperatures that exceed 2,000º F (1090º C). It is not a long hike.
Day 3 - 18 Feb 2022
Content: We reached at the live volcano hike late so we had to park little further away thus increasing one way hike from 1 mile to 1.5 mile. You should not forget to bring torch and wear some cold protecting clothes as it will be cold. The experience was awesome. This is one of the live volcanoes in the world and was worth it. You should not miss this place. It is experience of life time.
Day 4 - 19 Feb 2022
Content: After seeing Volcanoes at the Volcano National park we stayed at Naalehu which is close to both Green Sand beach and Pahala black sand beach. We didn’t get to spend much time at this property but it was a good stay and they had all the amenities you can think of.
Content: Just took some clicks of the place.
Content: There was a good way from Naalehu to Pahala so we took some pictures here.
Day 4 - 19 Feb 2022
Content: We got to Punalu’u black sand beach and saw about 7-8 turtles. Since this was our third black sand beach I would recommend other black sand beaches as compared to Punalu’u. The only attraction I liked at this location was the turtles. Apart from that it was ok place.
Day 4 - 19 Feb 2022
Content: After visiting Punalu’u black sand beach we went to Punalu’u bakery. This place was packed and line was long. It took us 30 mins to place our order. There were also love band playing Hawaiian music. We ordered Masaladas and ice cream. They were very good. We also bought bag of shirt bread cookies and fruit cake. Fruit cake was way too sweet but I still loved it. All in all this place was worth the wait.
Content: After Punalu’u bakery we headed to green sand beach. You can hike upto the beach which is about 3 miles. The hike is challenging although you would be hiking along the coastline with ocean breeze blowing at you. We however took shuttles which takes $20 for back and forth and it was totally worth it. I am not sure if I would have completed the hike. Also if you are planning to drive by yourself you need to have 4WD. The ride to the beach was very bumpy but we are still glad we took shuttles. The beach was different and sand were green. We stayed there for about an hour and we enjoyed our time there. Would really recommend this beach.
Day 4 - 19 Feb 2022
Content: After green sand beach we drove to Kona and had dinner at Kona Brewing. Wait was about 30 mins. The ambience is really nice and I loved their beers. My husband had IPA’s and he really enjoyed it. We order nachos and pizza both of them were very good. We also ordered desert which was also awesome.
Day 5 - 20 Feb 2022
