Day 1 - 8 Feb 2019

Ushuaia

Ushuaia, Ushuaia

Content: Ushuaia on Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost city in the world. From here it is just 1000 km to Antarctica. I was excited because the runway is very short and in the middle of the water. We were in Bahia Blanca before and had a 3 hour direct flight to Ushuaia. Luckily the landing was no problem. But the pilot brakes really hard. So better hold on. Down at the waterfront, at the tourist information there is a covered handicraft market. The building is so colorful that you can't miss it. Here there are really great things and individual treasures that will remind you of your trip.

Hotel Cap Polonio

Ushuaia, Hotel Cap Polonio

Content: The rooms were spacious and comfortable. There is a small store in the hotel lobby where you can buy small snacks. But there is also a card to order. There are many places where you can work. The WLAN is included. The location is also really unbeatable. From here, everything is within walking distance.

Content: The museum is the old prison. Here you can learn about the history of the prisoners. There is also an audio guide or guided tours. But you can also explore the whole thing on your own. I found it really interesting. The entrance fee is about 14 €.

Content: Tierra del Fuego. The end of the world. Breathtaking landscapes. That's exactly what I associate with the Tierra del Fuego National Park in Argentina. When we were in Ushuaia we ran a noon simply times the city up and down and booked finally with one of the innumerable agencies an excursion into the national park Tierra del Fuego. The excursions differ if only minimally and cost about all the same, namely about 60 €. In addition, about 10 € entrance fee for the National Park. Our tour went from 8 am - 2 pm, so exactly 6 hours. The tour price already included the tickets to take the train to the end of the world. For an additional price, you can also travel here in first class. On the train, everyone gets headphones. About an audio guide you get during the trip all the important information about the history explained. The train used to be a prison train. It brought the inmates from the prison in the city out to the national park to work there. You still ride on the original track. The ride lasts one hour. The southernmost post office in the world is privately operated. The owner himself is an attraction in itself here. Here you can actually send postcards and buy other knickknacks like stamps or magnets. For about 2€ you can also get a stamp here.

Location: El Calafate

Day 4 - 11 Feb 2019

El Calafate

El Calafate, El Calafate

Content: At the airport you can book a transfer to the hotel and back. Just go to the bus counter. The airport is so small, you can't miss it. The transfer there and back is cheaper than a one-way ticket. Together the ticket costs about 15 €. You will be taken to your hotel and picked up there.

Reserva Laguna Nimez

Content: One morning we walked through town towards Laguna Nimez. Be sure to ask for a map at the hotel. The Laguna Nimez is said to be home to flamingos and many other birds. We did not want to miss that. At some point the Laguna was signposted. The entrance fee is about 3€. And there it was, in the middle of the city a true little nature paradise. We saw many birds and even an owl flew over us their circles. Unfortunately there were no flamingos to see. I was a bit sad because I like flamingos so much but I was compensated with something else. Suddenly a fox sat in front of us on the path. He was not 2m away. We stopped and saw another fox. That was a great moment that I will never forget.

Patagonia Profunda

Content: Another highlight was the safari in the afternoon. We booked the tour through the hostel. Provider is Patagonia Profunda and lasts 5 hours including a meal. The tour takes place 2x times a day from 09:00-14:00 and 16:00-21:00. We did the tour in the afternoon. With a jeep we were picked up at the hotel and the tour was really fun. Our driver and guide an absolutely cool guy. He has explained and shown us super much. We drove deep into the Valley, saw a fox and the first Andean condor far up in the sky. By the way, the Andean condor has a wingspan of 3 meters. Here you can experience a really untouched nature and a fantastic landscape. Again and again you see skeletons lying around from deceased animals. This is really the true wilderness. Our biggest hope was to see a puma. But my absolute highlight were completely different animals that I really wanted to see, namely guanacos. Finally, we sat in an old estancia and had dinner. With wine and cheese we sat at the fireplace and listened to the sounds of the old record player. That was pure nostalgia.

Content: A day trip to El Chalten from El Calafate costs about 50 €. And then all at once it appeared, Mount Fitz Roy. What a sight. In the bus it was just silent. Everyone was just looking at this mountain. The Fitz Roy is a granite mountain and 3406m high. It is located in the Argenitinic and Chilean Andes. It is also called Cerro Fitzroy or Cerro Chalten. The drive from El Calafate to El Chalten took about 3 hours. El Chalten is really a small place. I recommend to stay at least one night here and to do one of the great hiking tours.

Content: One of my biggest highlights on my trip to Argentina was the Ice Trekking on the Perito Moreno Glacier. We booked the day trip during our stay in El Calafate. Just walk along the main street and you will quickly find it. With the provider Hielo y Aventura it should already start the next day. Converted, the mini trekking cost about 100€. The experience of walking on a glacier is worth every penny. I have rarely experienced anything so breathtaking before. The Mini Trekking is not very demanding. For those who want more, there is also a trekking with a higher difficulty level. For those who don't want to or can't do trekking there are other options. You can go to the balconies with a rental car or with another booked tour. Here, boat tours are also made to the glacier, so that no one has to do without this scenery.

Day 7 - 14 Feb 2019

El Calafate Airport

Departamento Lago Argentino, El Calafate Airport

Content: Patagonia and the end of the world in Tierra del Fuego was one of the most amazing trips I have ever taken. The country, the people and the breathtaking nature will always stay in my memory. I will definitely come back one day.
