Day 1 - 2 Jan 2022
Content: Trekking in the Amazon Jungle was something I simply couldn't NOT share with you!😍 It was one of the most surreal, incredible experiences of my life and everyone should visit the Amazon Rainforest and see it thriving with life, because 30 years ago it was so much more full of life, and in 30 years time there may not be much more left due to deforestation. 🌎 The Amazon Jungle inspired me to the extent that I ended up meeting a tour guide from here, and it lead to me writing my book - 'Born and Raised in the Amazon' which is available worldwide on Amazon. 💙 We travelled across the Rio Juma with just a small canoe 🛶, we saw countless animals, we got drenched in a beautiful amazon rainstorm ☔, and once we found shelter we sat watching for hours. We trekked at night, seeing lots of cool creatures and animals, and we saw the most incredible night sky, with hundreds of fireflies lighting up our path. I will be explaining more about this wonderful experience. Price: We paid £95 each for 4 days in the jungle, including 2 nights of accomodation in a jungle lodge, 1 night camping in the actual jungle and all of our food included (breakfast, lunch and dinner). 😍 There was 4 of us who booked the deal together, the more of you there is, the easier it is to bargain! We actually met the other 2 travellers in a hostel in Rio and then discovered we were all going to Manaus at the same time, which was such an awesome coincidence because we booked our flights way in advance!
Day 1 - 2 Jan 2022
Content: We flew from Sao Paulo to Manaus, which is quite an expensive flight, but trust me it is so worth it! We paid around £150 each for our return flights. If you head further north in Brazil you can get this flight for cheaper. We chose Manaus for the Amazon visit because we saw so many incredible reviews, and when we looked on the map, it was the most central point within the Amazon possible to access. We knew it was going to be an incredible adventure when we realised that there is a turtle aquarium in the airport! And also let me tell you, its insane when you fly into a capital city in the middle of the Amazon - because this city is so built up it really doesn't feel like you're in the middle of the Amazon Jungle! Please note: be careful when you visit Manaus, it is a dangeous city and so please take precautions (do not leave your hostel at night unless you NEED to). Who to book with: We booked with amazonjungleadventures and had a great tour guide called Norberto. The owner was from English Guyana and helped us with everything we needed, would highly recommend!
Day 2 - 3 Jan 2022
Content: Once we had everything arranged we got collected from the office of the tour company and began heading further inland towards the Amazon. The journey was not smooth, and it took us around 5-6 hours to arrive at the lodge! We were in a shared van, then a boat, then a van, then a boat and then an off road jeep and then another boat. The off road jeep was so much fun, we were completely on uneven ground the entire time so we were all holding on but were still bouncing around the car! On the first boat we passed the meeting of the waters, which is this incredible point where two large bodies of water meet and both are completely different colours. Then, we began heading to the lodge where we were staying!
Content: It wasn't long at our lodge before we were adventuring again, and this time we did our first trek in the Amazon - probably the greenest place I have ever seen! To access this jungle trek we had a boat provided for by the accomodation we were staying in. Each group that was in a tour was assigned a tour guide - and ours was Norberto. One thing that really shocked me was how smooth the Amazon river was, it was so incredibly peaceful floating along in our little canoe. It was so amazing how many different species of trees were here, the whole jungle trek we were completely memerised by how loud nature was, we could hear everything, the monkeys in the canopy, toucans flying up above, so many creatures crawling beneath us, it was incredible!
Content: We went piranha fishing and saw hundreds of red belly piranhas! We even went on a night canoe boat ride which definitely made us all feel the adrenaline, because there was no light except the guides headlight, and we were on the lookout for alligators. We actually ended up seeing a baby alligator and it was crazy because our guide told us that he was probably younger than a year old, and that same alligator would likely outlive us, living to around 100 years old.
Content: We stayed at a place called Amazon EcoPark Jungle Lodge. This place was so nice, we were all given private rooms and there even was a small river pool we could swim in. We all swam in the Amazon River (scary, i know!) and it was so much fun. But please be aware when you're swimming because there are some crazy creatures that live in the Rio Juma!
Day 3 - 4 Jan 2022
Content: We continued our jungle treks the next day, after enjoying a really nice breakfast at the lodge accomodation, most of the meals here were all you can eat buffets and it was great! Because we were travelling through covid it was very quiet here, we were the only group, I think normally this lodge does get quite busy, the lodge is normally used by many tour companies who share the place. We did another couple of 3 hour jungle treks, and our plan for that evening was so incredible, we were offered the chance to sleep in the jungle and this was definitely an offer we couldn't refuse!
Content: A night in the Amazon!! We built our hammocks to sleep in, with mosquito nets and then started to make a fire. One thing I completely forgot which is pretty important is to wear mosquito spray/cream under AND over your clothes! This is so important because when you're going to the loo in the middle of the night there are so many mosquitos out to get you... Also we went in January, which is the rainy season! So the mosquitos were more active than they normally are. We watched the sun set within the trees and enjoyed dinner that was cooked on the fire we all made! We then decided to trek towards where our canoe was docked and went for a night ride, the river was so smooth that we saw the most incredible stars reflecting from the sky into the water, and all of the constellations were so easy to spot! We saw so many fireflies whistling in the trees and honesstly it was just SO incredible to be in the middle of nowhere, no light pollution, no-one else was around, it just completely made us forget about our worries and was one of the best experiences of my life! We then headed back to the camp, had a cup of wine and headed to sleep in our hammocks, bracing ourselves for what creatures may be out there!
Day 4 - 5 Jan 2022
Content: Returning after our night in the Amazon was absolutely incredible, we returned back to our lodge, not before stopping at a small river shop along the way to get some biscuits! And then enjoyed breakfast. After this, we then went on another 3 hour trek which would be our last one as part of the trip, and again, it was so incredible! We then started the long journey back to our hostel, arriving late in the evening.
Content: This place was great because they allowed us to leave our belongings here whilst we were in the Amazon! We paid £11 for a private room for 2 people so our belongings would be safe and the reception desk kept our keys whilst we were away for 3 days ☺️ It was also so close to the city centre and the perfect place to order food. They had large gates for night, which made us feel safer and there was so CCTV so you could be sure the person at the door was the delivery driver☺️ 100% would recommend this place. Our friends were actually in a different hostel across the road from us and decide to move to our one because it had better vibes for backpackers 👌🏽 Things to absolutely bring with you to the Amazon: --Mosquito repellent --waterproof jacket/coat/poncho ( you WILL get soaked ) --longsleeve top that has UV protection --long socks --shoes you don't care about --plenty of comfy clothes to change into --a waterproof camera (GoPro) for the memories! ---make sure you have had yellow fever vaccination --you can take malaria tablets but malaria isn't common so we didn't because they can also make you sick
Day 5 - 6 Jan 2022
Content: Day 5 was a slightly different layout, so we woke up back at our hostel and was picked up to spend another day in the Amazon. This one-day experience is something most tourists do when they visit and let me tell you, please do a multi-day trek in the Amazon, it was so much less touristy and to have a personal tour guide was so worth it! This one day tour was actually given to us for free from the tour company because we were their first customers since before covid! And it was so amazing to see sloths, watch tribal dancing etc. but this experience wasn't as authentic as the previous 3 days. But as part of this one-day-tour you get to swim with dolphins, see sloths, anacondas, eat bullet ants, and watch traditional dancing!
